I don't get it, why should India have one common language?

We already have English as a back up.

Even many Internationally popular figures don't give two hoots about speaking English and are very comfortable speaking their native tongue. And this is within our own country, we must be more appreciative of this diversity than trying to force people to abandon their language.

Tamilians, even if they understand Telugu or Hindi, won't utter a word of it. I struggled a lot in TN but eventually picked few words and somehow managed to communicate. My marwari friends speak good Telugu and Tamil now . Yes, it's troublesome, uncomfortable when you travel BUT that minor discomfort should hardly be a basis to totally change oneself for others. Even with all this trouble people do enjoy their trips and manage to communicate and get by. That's the beauty of it... let it be. People are becoming toooo comfortable and Privileged

Peeps who talk about Devanagari script should perhaps understand that the original Brahmi script evolved into varying scripts across the subcontinent, out of which Devanagari is only one. Hindi and southern languages follow related scripts, but they're very different at the same time.

what’s your definition of a loser ? Btw 🤣

Intelligence , intellect and hard work do not sound resonant with them darling 😃 cheat , fraud and fake .. they can’t even talk properly ..these are the words that are generally used for them if they had their way .. they would want the Americans to learn telegu and act according their culture .. basically want to build their own culture here without adapting at all.. example: the fraud body shop IT consultancies that they own here 😆

Amreeka mein rehna, ya ghar / gadi hona koi bohot badi achievement nahin hai, and definitely can't be used to prove a person isn't a loser. 🤦

Have you stopped using Microsoft too? 🤣

And anybody can fib this nonsense as "accomplishments" on anonymous forums. You sound so pathetic. I hope you have stomach to digest same candor you dish out... but I doubt with your display of thin skin here.

Doesn't matter how many people speak south Indian languages. India became a unified country on the promise this will happen.

The promise got broken.

So south Indians are unwilling to put themselves at a disadvantage by agreeing to adopt Hindi as medium of communication.

And peeps have to wonder why?😆

It can go round after round & this debate will never end. 😆 Especially on this track 😆

Leave it.😆

My intention wasn't to offend anyone personally, but was to oppose a general narrative which is not the *only* narrative out there. Since you quoted me to rebuke me & prove that I, myself, am somehow is responsible for all my miseries I faced in South, I felt the need to explain further since it felt a lot like victim blaming lol.

I am generally not an active poster in this forum, just a silent reader but felt like putting in my own two cents in this post. That's all. 😅

Peace ✌🏻

I understand you & agree with you mostly. Just one thing. In my original post, I had not mentioned Hindi anywhere. That came up later only while arguing with a fellow member.

What I originally said was "one common language" and that would have been very much possible had we, all the communities, be united & was interested in a united India. For some statistical reasons, the term "common language" has become synonymous to Hindi & Hindi being a language of most North Indians is a problem.

The reason why I am not typing in Devnagari script or in any other native language is because we are not taught any common native language in schools. So we rather depend on a foreign language even when it's just us, two Indians are chatting. Feels the whole fight for our freedom & getting rid of the British a little bit pointless to me, that's all 😅😅

Anyway, to each their own.😅

a) Why can't the common language be English? I don't get the national pride of having to converse only in one Indian language for a population of 1.3 B when there's immense diversity and cultural differences. The othering of the English language is a bit much when the globalized world at large uses it for communication. We can thump our chests all for national prestige but these are plain facts. I get you experienced trouble due to language barrier. But I think you should applaud that the maids/cleaners/or the people around you spoke to you in English albeit broken so you'd understand them.

b) Native languages are taught in schools. They are called second and third languages. Every state board has their own language along with English, Hindi/Sanskrit. Same across CBSE and ICSE, unless you're in IB curriculum.

c) Getting rid of the British was to gain our sovereignty. What has language got to do with it? Even countries like China, S. Korea, and Germany that extensively teach/communicate in their native tongue have their population learning English on the side because it's advantageous and confers benefits to function and gets jobs. They are the most proud of their language and culture but you don't see them going gung ho about having to speak English.

Language/Dialect changes every 20kms in India.

India with a population of 1.3B and area of ~3.3 million SqKm.

Let that sink in.

We still managed to survive alright all these years and even domestic tourism is only increasing.

Just be open to little discomforts that come with such rich diversity. Even when percentage of English speakers was less people managed to communicate, now that many understand scraps of English atleast we are getting bothered by few inconveniences.

India need not lose it languges but seriously has to control the number of people speaking all these tongues (population) which is the main problem 😆

I wish you could see the problem in going to a city and expecting them to speak a language YOU are comfortable with. You're the guest there. Basic courtesy demands effort on the part of the guest to communicate. A phrasebook, Google translate... I'm sure the maid and the driver would've appreciated even a minimum effort at talking Tamil.

Their enjoyment of your discomfort was problematic, but perhaps consider they might have been responding to the entitlement they perceived.

Anyway, as you said, it's not an argument that's going to end. Ciao.
