Masoom was more of a parallel cinema than a commercial Bollywood movie , I remember reading, it was touted as his commercial film debut and it flopped. Maybe it was one of the first commercial films he signed but was released later because he also starred in Ghulami and Karma which were Bollywood films but were realised later. But then maybe I am wrong.
I think it was his first solo lead Bollywood film,
naseeruddin Shah debuted in 1975 with Nishant. Got awards for aakrosh, sparsh aroun 1980. Hum paanch was his full commercial film in 1980. Jalwa came much later.Originally posted by: surajhere

Apart from parallel cinema, which was also known as art cinema or arthouse cinema and was distinct from commercial bollywood films, his other bollywood films were multistarrer.
I remember reading their was something unique about Jalwa and that is, it was the first completely commercial Bollywood film of Naseerudding Shah with him as the only lead. Basically his first Bollywood film as the only hero of the film.

None of them were typical Bollywood commercial films. they starred Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi. Jalwa was a typical Bollywood potboiler with him as only hero for the first time in his career.
Parallel cinema was a completely different movement and it transgressed the language barrier. Almost every language had it's share of Parallel films which were separate from the mainstream films of that language.Sparsh and Masoom were part of Parallel Cinema.
masoom was a copy of our Marathi film ŕ¤ŕ¤°ŕ¤ŕĽŕ¤˛. Purely commercial film. Just because Shabana was there doesn't mean it was art film. Shabana had acted in Amar Akbar Anthony also and with shashi, vinod Khanna in many commercial films before masoom. First you said naseer debut was in jalwa then you said it was first commercial solo film for him now you are saying it was first commercial potboiler for him. So you can catagorise as much you want but masoom was a commercial film by all the means though it was family drama.Originally posted by: surajhere

There is no hard and fast rule that says one cannot make an art film inspired by a commercial film.
The problem with Naseeruddin Shah was that he never was Bollywood material, be it Hum Paanch or Ghulaami or Karma, he always needed crutches of other popular actors in Bollywood. The fact that Shekhar Kapor offered him the lead role indicates it was not a commercial Bollywood film. The same Shekhar Kapoor did Mr. India with Anil Kapoor which was a commercial film and then he did Bandit Queen with Seema Biswas which was not a Bollywod film.
Producers of Masoom are not known to make commercial bollywood potboilers.
Mine was an offhand remark from things I remembered I had read and turns out I might be right.

Nasaruddin shah had acted in so many commercial hits like Chamatkar,Tridev,Vishwatma,Mohara,Sarafarosh etc.bt sad part is he got less appreciation in those rather than in his so called art films and when a commercial film is a hit,lot of factors play imp role rather than just one actor like mainly songs, dances, glamour etc ,so an average heroine like Divya bharati IMO,became a successful and top actress with less talent ,same doesnt happen with villians or those who had an earlier image of art films except Manoj Vajapyee on recent times, off course now eqations have change
Bt IMO, Nasaruddin shah was never an art film actor although he got award for those films bt he was always remained the main choice for directora and producers over Om puri in bollywood.
Masoom was a pure commercial film with intense emotions which was beautifully written and directed by Shekhar kapoor.it was never an art or parallel cinema.
Infact much later in 2000,jab pyar kisi se hota hai starring Salman and Twinkle was its average comedy remakeđ
