Ranbir and Kartik are way more hyped than Diljit and have better PR and backing in industry.

They also have no history of social or political comments or work on issues like 1984 the way Diljit has.

Jogi was hardly promoted or had big banners or other big stars like Akshay or Kareena in it. Hence ignored. Besides also being ignored for fear of being labeled anti India for giving award to a film on 1984.

Thanks for reading the post though.

I see you feel very strongly about Jogi. The film must have touched a chord inside you. Happens to all Sikhs and survivors of 1984 or their kin.

Nah.. I will get over it soon. Maybe I have not paid close enough attention. As I said films about controversial topics that have delivered both in numbers and critical acclaim are normally never ignored. For example, Haidar or Udta Punjab. This might be a shocker on this forum. But Qala not being nominated for an award function being held abroad. That does not even have the critics category it is about the business aspect I can wrap my head around. Because from what I just checked despite getting a perfect thumbs up from critics all across the board, Qala hardly did anything in terms of numbers. Very much like Bulbul. It didn't even trend at number 1 in India.

More people on this forum might have heard about or watched Qala. But it was Jogi that not only trended worldwide but almost accomplished the same thing as some of the other big OTT releases. That is explainable Diljit does have a huge fan following. Yes, most of it consists of people in Punjab and the Sikh diaspora across the world. It is not very present on this forum or other places where movies are discussed in Bollywood. Meanwhile, Tripti is hardly known to anyone yet.

In terms of critical acclaim. It was Ali Abbas who is more of a commercial filmmaker's rare attempt at pure art. He is not a master of it like Anvita is. So it did not get the perfect thumbs up in terms of every aspect. But it was almost as critically acclaimed to the same extent. Far more than the likes of Bramashtra, Dasvi or Bhool Bulaiya. Even critics that found a flaw in the movie here and there almost all praised the performances in the movie. The performances almost got a perfect thumbs-up across the board.

I don't think I have seen a film deliver well in both numbers and do great in terms of critical acclaim to be completely ignored. I definitely was not paying attention very closely. I am sure there were other films like that. Were the politics discussed in the film that much of a taboo? Or is Bollywood really that scared of the Indian government right now? I am just trying to make sense of it. There has to be some reason. The political controversy that you mentioned made the most sense so far. So thank you.

I have seen films about 1984 that were far more vivid in portraying the gross carnage. Jogi is actually a lot easier to sleep on.

Oh, one more thing. I am pretty sure Diljit is backed up by a pretty big PR company in the west as well. Again he mostly uses it for his music as that is his main love. He told Anupama that he does not care as much for Hindi films. I wonder if he is as confused as I am.

Diljit never seemed interested in acting in BW if his earlier interviews were anything to go by. Stardust magazine also accused him of having attitude. I guess Diljit just does not want to tolerate whims of BW producers or do the kind of kissing or intimate or explicit scenes they want or get rid of turban or sport clean shaven look. He also does not want to do stereotypical sardar caricature roles of druggie or villager or NRI or clown or drunkard or army man or cop. Bollywood stereotypes sardars in these categories anyway leaving no scope for performance.

Qala is talked of only online. Did not see anyone else discuss it. Anyway these are not as popular as wildly popular web series like Family Man, Sacred Games etc.

Filmfare just gave awards to more known people or safer options that are non controversial.

Market does not like stars who take too many or open stand on any issue. Aamir paid price for it. So did Kangana and Kher. Diljit being labeled Khalistani and hounded by IT cell online is probably a reason why media hype around him has been controlled now.

That is what irks me to some extent. Bollywood has a history of discriminating against Sikhs. No one talks about it. From portraying us as clowns onscreen to hardly giving us any awards. Many have seen Dharmendra discuss that despite giving numerous hits a year at his peak. He did not get a single award in his career. Jeetendra, Ekta's father replied to Dharmendra in Punjabi. He goes my big brother at least you were nominated. I was not even nominated. I did not want to sound like a blind fan. But something makes me wonder if this is just a continuation of that discrimination. You are right. Whatever hype of recognition Bollywood gave Diljit earlier. After he irked some big people in Bollywood, it does seem like they are hell-bent on dismissing him in general. Or in other words, pretending like he doesn't exist.

Yes it has unless Sikhs hide own identity like Gulzar.

You see how S. Mohinder, Geeta Bali, Uttam Singh hardly got awards. There was also this popular singer who sang hits like Ram siya Ram starring Sachin. He had hit songs and his songs are still played at jagratas but he was never even nominated let alone get awards and he hinted music industry had lot of politics and he was a simpleton and knew nothing. Jagjit Singh also hardly got awards at his prime. Jaspal Bhatti was also reduced to cheap caricature when he did Hindi films and hardly got awards even as comedian. I was shocked when he was ignored at Comedy honours around 2010 which honoured Jaaved Jaffery, Jagdeep, Johny Lever, Kader Khan etc but left him out.

Sardars are always told to either cut hair, shave beard or change or abbreviate name or sidelined or caricatured and most Sikhs are expected to downplay their identity.

Like Nimrat Kaur hardly behaves much like a Sikh.

I bet Uttam Singh would get no award if DTPH was not produced by YRF and directed by Yash Chopra.

Manjot Singh of Oye lucky lucky oye had also spoken of bias against Sikhs and being offered caricature roles or asked to shave beard and get rid of turban and cut hair if he indeed wanted more variety of roles. He refused and is still getting less work or same old caricature roles like the sardar friendly sidekick he was in Dream girl with Ayushmann.

Jeetu and Dharam were not good at marketing themselves and never buttered up mediapersons nor had any political or media or underworld links.

Hence no awards and hardly nominations despite hits. I am surprised how their stardom is ignored and people make it all about only typical names like Khanna, Bachchan. Jeetendra had clearly overtaken everyone around mid 80s. Yet he hardly got credit for it.

I bet if he did not lord over TV through Balaji and Ekta, he would not get recognition he gets now atleast at T.V. awards.

So the clique issue of Bollywood goes back to the 1980s ?
