This is a BW forum. So obviously not many of us have seen work of actors in other language cinema.

Nor included their names.

For me best Devdas is Dilip Kumar and his film makes one realise how low standards have fallen that trash like SLB version won awards. Suchitra Sen and Vyjanthimala also trump Ash and MD anyday as Paro and Chandramukhi.

Especially Sen as Paro.

Since this forum is obsessed with one guy so bots of one, made him winner as well. 🤣

Proving how much they know about acting or nuance.

Yes I know this is BW forum and meant to discuss mostly BW/Hindi films. But this particular film is made from a Bengali Book and it was made in lot of other languages too. So there are indeed many actors who played Devdas.

But unfortunately only Hindi version gets hyped because it's market is much wider. This is one example how the better quality work got submerged because of the noise made by the Hindi film market. An example how regional cinema is pushed aside by Hindi Cinema.

Thankfully the tide has turned around and South Indian/regional language films are getting the recognition they deserve nation wide and Hindi Cinema realising that they are not the only flag bearers of Indian Cinema.

I still find this poll somehow stupid as the Devdas-movies are made with different purposes/visions and at different times.

One can easily compare a 1953 movie and a 1955 movie which both are a close adaptation of the novel. And there Dilip Kumar was very good but personally, I found the actor he lauds himself, slightly better.

SLB's Devdas as well as Anurag Kashyap's are kind of very personal renditions of the Devdas-story which just took the basics of the novel. It's like working on a certain theme (like Romeo&Juliet-story).

In those renditions, I find that both Devdas-acting-performances are very good/intense.

So why exactly making a poll with ONE choice only and pitching these actors AGAINST each other... and not a simple discussion thread?

South films are getting recognition because they are dubbed now or we get subtitles online or in DVDs.

That was not there till a decade ago.

Obviously Hindi cinema will be more known if more people speak Hindi or know it in North, Central and Northwest India.

And BW forums will discuss mainly Hindi language films only.

I hope older classics from regional cinema are also dubbed or subtitled so we get to see them the way we can see old Hindi films.

I do not think there is sidelining of non Hindi films. Unless you call out bias of GOI that has mostly given awards to Hindi films and stars or foreign media that treats BW as Indian cinema.

Had regional films been dubbed, subtitled earlier and released in wider markets earlier as they are now, they would be known more.

You must be joking. How can anyone be bigger in stature than Big B.

Dilip Kumar is the original Khan and lasted for decades, gave hits for decades from 40s to 80s. He was called Nat Samrat, aka emperor of acting and considered inspiration and guru of acting by everyone from Amitabh, Dharmendra to even SRK himself who felt inspired by him.

He was not only considered an acting school in himself but also gave plenty of BO hits including ATBB Mughal e Azam.

Of course AB seems bigger now due to global polls he won or work he is doing even at 80 or success on T.V. as well. But because there was no TV or opening of BW to global markets and media earlier it does not mean DK was less.

Yes even GOI leans/used to lean towards Hindi films. There's a video of a speech given by Chiranjeevi at an event marking the release of his movie is circulating in the social media where he mentions about a national event hosted by Central govt mostly the achievements of Hindi films were showcased and achievements of other language films were just mentioned in passing. Another example is the IFFA wards which is only about Hindi films and this is conducted by Hindi film people. It is not just GOI or foreign press but Hindi Film industry also pass of Hindi films as the true and only representatives of Indian Cinema. All thanks to IFFA we now have a SIIMA awards which show cases south Indian films. About ignoring films from Eastern part of India the less said the better.

State govts also have pro BW bias. Punjab govt gave first Punjabi Ratan award to Yash Chopra who has never even lived in Punjab after he shifted post partition nor visited or kept in touch with it.

Rather than veteran Punjabi artistes, or even non celeb achievers like writers, scientists or inventors or social workers who actually lived, worked in Punjab.

UP govt ignored UP artistes and easily gave Yash Bharti sammaan to Abhishek in 2007 itself.

Well South Indian state Govt awards at least don't ignore the achievements of the people belonging to their states. May be that's the reason why South India is progressing.

Yes South is great inspiration for others to resist Hindi imperialism, imposition and preserve own culture, language, without accepting only Hindi belt as assimilating culture and for standing for federalism and rights of states. Their resistance to Central govt attacking federalism is amazing. Their pride and promotion of own language and culture is great. Unlike most of us who lost own culture and language yielding to Hindi belt and BW influence and began to see own state languages as regional or local or not profitable enough.
