Two priests, on August 21, from the well-known Mahakal temple in Ujjain demanded that Zomato, the popular online food delivery service, withdraw an advertisement starring Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan because it is allegedly offensive to Hindus.

The Jodha Akbar star in the advertisement states that since he’s in Ujjain and was in the mood for a ‘thali’ (food platter), he ordered from ‘Mahakal’. This statement has irked temple priests as the Mahakal temple or the Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is among the 12 ‘Jyotirlingas’ where devotees visit from across the country.

The priests, named Ashish and Mahesh, have asked Zomato to withdraw the latest ad immediately and apologize or face legal action. Take a look at the controversial bit from the advertisement here:

The priests claimed that the ad offends Hindus since "prasad" is served to devotees on a thali. Reportedly, they went to the chairman of the Mahakal temple trust Ashish Singh, who is also the Ujjain district collector, and urged him to take action against Zomato so that no one would ever again mock Hinduism. Talking to reporters, Singh stated that the ad is “misleading”.

Amid this controversy, social media users too are tweeting against Zomato and Hrithik. Hashtags like #BoycottZomato and #रितिक_रोशन_माफी_मांग are currently trending on Twitter.

Responding to a tweet that urged people to boycott Zomato, the food delivery service clarified that the advertisement aired only in specific pin codes of Ujjain and referenced ‘thalis’ at ‘Mahakl Restaurant’ and not the temple.

In the last tweet in the thread, Zomato issued an apology and stated that the ad in question is no longer running. The tweet read, “We deeply respect the sentiments of the people of Ujjain, and the ad in question is no longer running. We offer our sincerest apologies, for the intent here was never to hurt anyone's beliefs and sentiments.”

Hrithik, on the other hand, is yet to react.

I think when Zomato has clarified that they talked about Mahakal Restaurant and not the famous temple at Ujjain then why the brouhaha?

Anyway I liked how fans of all stars trended hashtags against boycott gang today. Time for fans of all stars to show unity too and counter lies, propaganda, report accounts that spread hate. Just as SRK fans got a journo from Zee News fired for his hate tweets against SRK's identity recently.

I never saw it from religious POV. Keep your sarcasm to yourself. I hate bigots of own community also and used to be fed up of baseless controversies created over films like Singh is Kinng, Singh is Bling and Love Aaj Kal.

Those who know my old posts, know where I stand when it comes to bigots of any kind making ruckus of non issues.

Just recently I wrote against bigots targeting Manmarziyan and Pataal lok (which happened to include Sikh community elements as well). And how Taapsee has gotten in trouble with members of her own community too in past.

I hate trend of politicians and velli clergy or parties like BJP, Akali Dal or AIMIM or whatever making hullaboo about non issues and targeting low hanging fruit like ads, films, serials or social media posts or fashion photo shoots. I loathe their trolls, propaganda and paid hashtags and harassing others. One of my fav YouTubers Jus Reign quit Twitter and stopped making new comedy videos thanks to threats and harassment from Khalistanis in Canada. I hate every damn bigot ruining our entertainment for their petty agenda.

I do not need to prove to anyone about my credentials when it comes to equally loathing any bigot ruining our entertainment and FoE. Keep your whataboutery on religions to yourself.

TM, you are one heck of a revolutionary member here! Looks like you have take it upon yourself to reform hindus, there priests and there temples. Being a member from a sikh community yourself, it is commendable on your part to take up such a huge challenge to put hindu bigots in their place and to show the world how minorities are suffering at their hands and how even their temples and priests push their communal agendas by attacking inocent bollywood folks.

I applaud you for your constant efforts to make India forums and world a better place for everyone, especially those from minority community! I am sure they are all appreciating your efforts and looking upto you to follow your path in working towards betterment of hindus.
