As someone who has lived in the USA for over twenty years. And not just that driven and taken the rail through every single state in the continental USA - I can safely say that once you're here - brown is brown is brown is brown.

When people first migrate here they come with their own strong cultural identity. But once you're here no one cares if you are Indian, Pakistani, or Sri Lankan - you're just a brown immigrant. No one cares if you're Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, or Christian - you're just a brown immigrant. Even Middle Eastern and LatinX get thrown in the same mix.

Over time most immigrants identify as desi Americans or South Asians. Yes, there are people who do feel strongly about national identity. In places, with high desi populations, people will even develop strong linguistic and regional communities - like Bengalis, Punjabis, Tamilians etc.

But out here in the middle, we're just brown/desis/south Asians, so on and so forth, and what have you.

Desi Americans are too few to matter in the market. I know we all think we're Very Important People, but the numbers are not just there.

Or Disney thought somehow that mentions of Bollywood and SRK would also appeal to the tech bro type who mainly watch superhero genre.

If they are catering to Indian likes, it's because they want dollars from it, which mean the 1.2 billion Indians, not the 4 million desi Americans. As for why Pakistani superhero, Disney types think all South Asians are the same and they think the woke silliness works everywhere.

i also think it is a khichdi, one brown super hero, some tadka of muslim, southasian, bw , srk with usual dose of wokness. I am only thankful they did not add elephants and snake charmers

they didn't do much research, these issues are very nuanced, you have to be totally embedded into the dynamics of the nations and the communities to know it. there has been rapid progress in the last few decades that you have to be totally plugged in to get the dynamics.

i personally thought, never have i ever was authectic maybe because it was based semi-autobiographical same as jhumpa's namesake

Although, MCU is it's unique entity catering to "moviegoers", I don't think you can completely sever a character from the comic books. I feel that much of this discussion holds "Ms Marvel" as purely a streaming show in a vacuum separate from a comic book character that has been around for several years now.

As far as I can tell, that seems to be common among south Indian Christians, having a Hindu middle or first name

But never among Muslims though

I have a Sanskrit/hindu first name, which is also a very common Pakistani name… I’ve been mistaken for a hindu/Sikh a lot of times in US (by Indians) due to my first name… so it’s not uncommon at all…

also for people saying kamala is not a Pakistani/Muslim name… I have a kamala aunty 😂

I also know a Hannah and Sabrina born and raised in Pakistan… not sure why people think that only names like Aisha, Samina are appropriate “Pakistani” names

And yeah, just like woke people are surprised that a made-up term like Latinx is not going down well with actual Hispanic people, some woke creative types are just dumb enough to imagine Indians in India will be perfectly happy with a Pakistani super hero. To the woke white person, brown people are one large group, with only grievance against white people as their peeve. Otherwise, we are all filled with goodness and cheer, tending cattle and living in harmony.

i agree and what they fail to realise is that "brown" people or indians (esp the real younger lot in India ) is not looking for endorsement from them, like vijay amritraj in james bonds octupussy or amrish puri in temple of doom got lot of attention ages ago

its not like they spot an indian/brown representation in hw and say

That srk reference is spot on though… 😆 my cousins born and raised in US… don’t know a lot about Pakistani pop culture but they sure know who srk is…. If there is one desi celebrity they can recognize, it’s srk.

Lol. That's why I said that this is aimed at white critics and brown Americans. Nobody else is in the equation here.

Then I guess they looked at it as expense to begin with. Woke creds and all to shut people up in case someone points out the lack of rep in MCU.

It can be the case. But then, they already had Black Panther.
