I'll give a list of my top contenders...I think Ankur may be it for me as the #1. It just showed the perils of the caste system so well and Shabana Azmi was excellent.

Before Mother India was done, there was a lot of books by pro-British colonialists saying terrible things about India, but Mother India was so well received it nearly won an Oscar (and should have, lost by 1 vote). So I guess Mother India out of all the famous ones for me.

Other contenders:

Baiju Bawra (one of Meena Kumari's best) - Sahib Biwi Aur Gulam was too autobiographical.

Boot Polish (child actors, but so good)

Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, Andhadhun, for modern-day contenders.

Sujata (Nutan is a bit underrated for her acting skills these days, easily top 10 actresses)

Sadma or Lamhe...I pick Sadma

Pyaasa

Ghatak

Andaz Apna Apna

(for me non-hindi is easy, Mayabazar)

Mere Naam Joker was too long to be on this list (same problem as Pakeezah)

If we consider overall audience enjoyment then it's Sholay.

Choosing 'The movie' is very difficult. Many classics have already been mentioned. I will mention old classics, contemporary ke liye lamba post ho jaayega. 😆

Some of my favourite movies from all time would be Mother India, Sholay, Anand, Dosti, Golmaal, Awaara, Pyaasa, CID, Jaagte Raho, Deewar, Mera Naam Joker etc.

But a lot of them , I don't keep going back to because they are extremely heavy, for instance Pyaasa, it is depressing but it is such a wonderful movie, the climax is also gut-wrenching for me. It is like that with a lot of Guru Dutt movies that I watched, they are kind of draining because they are so much in his movies to take but they leave a very deep impact.

I like a lot of Raj Kapoor movies despite them being very long, Movies like Mera naam joker, Jaagte Raho, I have ended up in tears towards end of the movies. In fact, I had started developing a taste for black and white movies with Raj Kapoor films only, so there is a special place.

Dosti, I feel is very underrated. It is not spoken about as much, but is a gem.

Out of all, the movies I keep going back to are Hrishikesh Mukherjee ones (Golmaal,Chupke Chupke ,Bawarchi, Naram Garam etc) and Basu Chatteejee - Amol Palekar combination movies. All easy breezy sweet little films with awesome music.

I have watched limited black and white/old movies, so that is there but even in those few, some of them have had a very lasting impact.
