English-foreign or Indian language ❓❓❓

Hiiiii Friends.

Before reading it, plz dont jump to a conclusion. It's not a debate on any language. I have some genuine queries related to the English language.

Recently, again the old controversy about the national language has resurfaced. Reading an article related to it, I thought to share and discuss my viewpoint on language (especially the English language) with You.

I Feel in theory, a national language is a nice idea, bcoz people find difficulty interacting with people when move to other states but imposing one language is not nice, it can be disastrous (history is the evidence). IMO, Instead of designating any one language as the nation’s standardized tongue, the focus should be on investing in the development of other regional languages. Through multilingualism, India’s multiculturalism (that is for what our India is known ( land of diversity)) can be preserved.

India is a land of many languages; every language has its own beauty, I love and feel proud of this thing. But my ques is not about the national language. My point is something else.

Other than these languages, English has now become an Indian language and this is the language that is spoken most widely and I believe its a must for it is a global language for the opportunity.

In schools also, Mother tongue and English language are taught as main subjects. What I am noticing is that neither kids nor parents have any interest in their mother tongue; kids can speak their language but cannot write properly. While writing, it seems that it's some alien language for kids. Once I was teaching my daughter (When she was in Ist class) Hindi, I asked her to write word dhadkan, she wrote darkan. If you ask the students of 7-8 class,he will give the same answer.😒

Reason may be that they don’t focus on the Hindi language bcoz they know it's of not that much important and will not be used anywhere.

My first ques is : Is it the same with other languages also or Hindi is tough ( like chottie, badi e makes adults also confused😆 ) .

Now come to the English language. Here, even after studying in English medium schools, people are not able to communicate in English, so you can very well imagine about the people who study in Hindi medium.

Somewhere the other these people find embarrassed or feel inferior in front of the people who speak English very well.

I want to cite some examples:

My cousin is in the law field, his schooling is from Hindi medium. With graduation only, he joined an English-speaking course. Now, his English is too good means really too good, He struggled hard and in a very short period of time, he has achieved a high position in the Aviation industry. Still sometimes, he feels low or feel inferior to his Boss, who is qualified from a foreign University, It's difficult to match the communication skills of a person who has been brought up in an English Environment. This is an example where another one is also good at the English language.

One of my neighbors asked me how she could learn to speak English. Her husband is in the navy. She said,” mujhe accha nahilagta ki mujhe English bolni nahi aati.” She also joined some institutes but still not able to communicate in English.

Just 2 days back, one of the juniors of my hubby was saying “ Sir, English bolni nahi aati, bahut try karta hoon). I have seen many people spending money on English-speaking courses-result zero. Even after spending time abroad, some people cannot speak English. Even after having expertise in their subjects, kahi na kahi, they feel underconfident. I know practice is the key, but I think, it’s not the native language, so people find difficulty in learning.

I feel one should know English language for its the common means of communication all over the world and a large number of people use this language.

My ques is: What do you think about feeling underconfident or embarrassed?? Why do people find it difficult to speak this language, even after working in MNCs for a long? Can people learn to speak English without having proper knowledge of Grammar by watching English videos only??

Language sirf ek communication ka way ek form hoti hain..and I believe jise jis language me comfortable lage use wahi language use karni chahye..English ho ya hindi sab apni jagah equally important hai..

Par mujhe lagta hai jitni simple hindi hai infact jitni expressive hamari hindi language hai wo English na hai na ho sakti hai..

Aaj ke time me hume sab English aana bhot zaruri ho gaya hai..or hum sabko aati bhi hai..par agar kisi ko nahi aati ya wo nahi bol pata to usme embarrass feel karne ki zarurat nahi hoti hai..Maine bhot acchi posts par bhi logo ko hindi me communicate karte dekha hai..

Problem ab tab aa jati hai jab apne hi country me log hindi bolne walo ko inferior or English bolne waale logo ko superior samajh lete hain..

Waise bhi aapki intelligence or smartness aapki language decide nahi kar sakti..

I believe hume hindi ko lekar proud feel karna chahye..ye bhi ek language hai baaki sabke jaise..jab baaki log apni language par proud feel karte hain to hum kyun nahi..

Sabhi languages aana bhot acchi baat hai..par apni khud ki mother tongue ko peeche chodte hue nahi..

nowadayas indians start laughing if anyone speak in regional languages anywhere outside

i am not sure why they do that

what shame in speaking local languages

how will languages survive if we laugh at people speaking them

englih is language of business

but while talking to each other speak in local languages or in 40 years they will be no bhojpuri, malyala, tamil or marathi

all will extinct

nowadays kids feel shame to talk in mother toung or local language

somewhere its a mindset that talking in regional language is inferior

do africans feel ashamed to speak in zulu or france ppl in french nooo

but in india we feel ashamed to speak in local languages

they will extinct in some decades at this rate only hindi or english or urdu shalll remain

and rest all forgotten may be like sanskrit or pali

even in hindi belt hindi is no real language it was pali or bhojpuri but mughal mixed persian with sanskrit and made urdu and hindi etc

I am proud of my mother tongue Hindi. Main aisi society main rahi hoon jahan pe ladies bahut fluent English bolti है और mostly English mei hi baat karti है and I can understand engish but main free hoke hindi mein hi baat karti thi. Mujhe kabi embarrassing feel nahi hua main Hindi mein baat karoongi to yrh log kya sochenge. Infact un logon ne bhi kabhi nahi socha ki main Hindi mein kyon baat kar rahi hoon

We have given freedom chahe hum Hindi mein baat kare ya English mein . Koi bhi apni marji se kisi bhi language se baat kar sakta, है

Aisi koi boundation nahi thi ki only English mein baat karni है य only mein baat karni hai.

Haan yrh hota hai agar kisi ko English nahi aati to woh seedha yeh kehts mujhe English nahi aati to sabhi log phir Hindi mein translate karke bata te hai

Waiss bhi jo bahut se log aise hote hai jine na English aate hai aur na hindi unhr sirf regional language aati hai jaise kisi only Punjabi ya only bengali ya only South Indian language aati hai

We have still people to help us who know engish ss we'll as Hindi and reginal who translau language for us or convey our msg into other language and yes people help us conveying our msg that what we want to say to other people

Hey Sam, again an interesting topic. Regarding national language, my views are a little different and may seem unwelcoming. From wherever I see it, I feel a national language plays a crucial role in a country's development. For example let's take all the developed nations like Japan, South Korea, France, the USA, UK.. all these countries have a national language. National language drives national unity in any country, even if there are hundreds of other languages and dialects present in the country. Apart from that, look at the MNCs and private firms in the countries mentioned above, especially the Asian ones (Japan, South Korea, and China), all their businesses are in their national language.

In India, the situation is different, as you said India is a land of many languages and every language has its own beauty. Imposing one's language/culture/thoughts/opinions on anyone is wrong. Today, Hindi is the language used in all the central government work but tomorrow people may ask for their own language.. in that case, which language should we choose and on what basis? On the basis of majority, on the basis of ancient history? I thought a lot about this and I still do and I will continue doing that. But I am not sure if I will ever find an answer or any conclusion to that.

English has become an inevitable part of our life. Though it is not an Indian origin language we cannot survive without that. At least, the field in which I am I can't.

I cannot say about today's schooling system. I was born and brought up in Jharkhand, so I am more comfortable with Hindi than my mother tongue Bengali. I studied Hindi till class 10 and after that, I had a choice between Hindi and CS. But whatever Hindi literature and grammar I studied were very different. I could summarize the poem's meaning in pure Hindi and it was taught that way. Nowadays, I do understand that not many young people would opt for a career in Hindi literature and grammar, maybe that's why the sorry state of affairs.

I would say learning English is the easiest. Apart from that everyone would say that learning their mother tongue is easy. Even in Bengali we have choti e ki maatra and all.

About the incidents you mentioned: I feel language is just a medium of communication. One doesn't have to speak fluent hindi/english/kannada/or any language. As long as the other person can understand it should be fine. In the work field, it is necessary to have basic communication skill as you may be doing everything perfectly but you have to give presentations as well, there it is needed.

One feels embarrassed because there are people who make them feel that way. Lack of basic empathy. Half of the problems would be solved if one acts by putting oneself in another's shoes. Yes, people can speak English without having proper knowledge of grammar by just watching youtube videos. I know many people who have done that. Learning any language needs dedication, interest, and patience. I myself have learned a little Korean just by watching Korean movies and dramas. Mostly because raw episodes would be out and I had to wait for subtitles for 2 days. 😂

As Indians, we can try to learn the basics of all the language where we are staying. I know basic kannada so that I can talk to the auto/bus drivers. Also trying to learn telugu and tamil.. atleast the basics so that if I go there I can converse with people. In my personal opinion one should always learn atleast the basic words of the language of the state where they are staying. That's the least one can do

It is not uncommon to be embarrassed about being unable to speak a language that is not one’s first lang. But learning it is not possible without trying to speak, listen and read that language. One can only learn from making mistakes. But there should be a sincere attempt to learn and correct ourselves if pronunciations are off. It will take many years of continuous practice to speak fluently to make the right choice words stringing a sentence and enunciating the words clearly.

Like many of us here, English is not my first language either. Living and working in US, it took me a while to get used to the pronunciations too. It boils down to the audience/the person you are talking to. Based on which, it is important to watch the tone and the right choice of words. This is still a work in progress, if I realize I mispronounced or used a wrong word in the context, I quickly apologize for the wrong choice of word to indicate what I really meant.

One should be willing to listen how others speak and correct themselves if required. Also acknowledging when you don’t know something/make mistake is nothing to be ashamed of.

Why do people even after working in MNCs for along time have trouble? I think it is because they are not trying to correct themselves. The attempt to learn it is not sincere enough. At work, I have come across fellow Indians who begin talking in hindi/or their native lang at work. I do not encourage that at all.

This is what baffles me about char Anupama – she has heard the word sorry billion times, others have corrected her too. Can’t she make an attempt to change? Learn a little bit from what she sees/hears around her?

1. In ancient times, how would people communicate?

Bharata has always been a land of many languages from time immemorial and known to have trade relations globally (not just internally), how were we communicating? Surely a person from the Northern provinces of Bharata was communicating with a person from the Southern provinces of Bharata, likewise with Eastern and Western provinces of Bharata. How did traveller's from across the globe communicate with locals?

2. When do we say a language is dead?

Example: we say Hebrew is becoming dead and such.

Is the commercial viability and applicability a measure of the languages' existence?

Really, it's very shocking that 3000 languages are on verge of extinction.

It was something new for me.

It has forced me to think from a different perspective.
