Nisha was simply ASKED if she will be filling to marry Rajesh, and she couldn't hide "over excitement" thinking they are asking her to get married to Prem.

It was classic Bollywood confusion scenario, but it doesn't make the film "regressive", per my opinion.smiley36

It's just the families were dumb enough to NOT let Rajesh and Nisha talk with each other even once before marriage, and then Prem and Nisha were even dumber for not pointing out the confusion to their families.

Towards the end of the film, Rajesh even asks Nisha, would she love the kid a bit lesser as his "chachi"?

It shows that nobody was "regressive" in the film, except maybe Bindu's character. But even she was shown in a grey light and then gets redeemed towards the end of the film.

(Lol, she even miraculously gets pregnant😆🤣)

On topic, there are so many films that were downright pathetic...and not just in the 90s. Regressive films exist even today.😵

You say that Nisha was "simply asked" if she'd be open to the idea of filling her sister's shoes and keeping the hamster wheel going without disrupting anyone else's lives, but was it really just a "simple" question?

We differ there cuz I don't buy that the family members and Rajesh showed any sign of care or consideration towards Nisha and her life by popping a question like that to her. One sister dies, so let's get the other one to replace her is such a loathsome idea. Personally speaking, that option should have never been on the table at all.

Another irksome part about it is the urgency to fill in the vacancy of Rajesh's wife and the baby's mother, and the assumption that a man can't look after himself or his baby when life throws him a curveball. It just couldn't wait cuz he was so depressed he started roaming around with a shawl on at all times. Forget the fact that they were all mourning, including Nisha who lost her sister and was much closer to her than anyone else. His mental health took a hit and his baby needed a new mommy, but her life and mental health didn't matter?

No matter how many times they asked her for reassurance and "consent" with the decision, they all did her wrong by even initiating such a preposterous "proposal" to begin with. Rajesh was okay with the prospect of Nisha sacrificing her life to keep his family going and so were the rest of the family members, and that is problematic enough on their end.
