Aishwarya Rai is very much a south Indian actor. She debuted in films with Maniratnam's Tamil film Iruvar.

Maniratnam and Aishwarya Rai collaborated in a few films after that too.

She acted in quite a few Tamil films.

Her association with South Indian Films is quite strong and long standing.

She seems to be Maniratnam's muse.
