Hmmm.. According to me.. the devi thing is all symbolic to respecting women.. but yes they need to be respected as human beings.. and not as goddesses.. but that is something very deeply ingrained in Indian culture..so it is probably very difficult to get rid of that notion..but acknowledging that a woman need not always be a devi was a good step in my opinion.. yours might differ and that's completely alright na.. different perspectives of the same thing!
I would actually want them to scrap off kanyadan and bidaai the entire thing about a girl being treated as a commodity that is being donated or sent away.. and the way these rituals are glorified..
No offence to any culture/custom.. but this is my opinion..
What do you guys think?
Ok.. so I don't know nowadays how it's done but the recent wedding in my family, there was no bidai ritual, because we all flew to India for the wedding and were all together in same hotel (boys side, girl's side) and were all flying back together as well. After wedding was lunch and no formal bidai function.
Also kanyadaan was done by dad and siblings/spouses together as the girl lost her mother when she was a teen, and her family was her pillar, she didn't want just her dad or her elder brother/Bhabhi she wanted everyone, unconventional, or away from traditional rituals maybe, but totally loved by all ..
Also in US (I speak so coz I've live here, most bidais of boys and girls are the day they leave parents homes be it for college education/work/careers, after that they are adults and forge their way in life, yes they come home, but usually never live back in parents home ever) so concept of bidai is now changing I guess.
Again, I don't know how it's in India, which again has a varied stratas of society.
