OP - There's no formula for a hit, not all movies are blockbuster that's why most actors have a hit ratio below 60%...Its easier to make a critically acclaimed good movie than a successful mass masala and none claimed that all movies are blockbusters down South

If I am not wrong, KGF 2 is semi hit in Telugu, Average in Kannada, Blockbuster in Hindi and hit in Tamil and Malyalam...Same goes for RRR, It wasn't a blockbuster everywhere

No you are wrong, KGF 2 did 100+ crores in Karnataka - so blockbuster hit in Karnataka-kannada, blockbuster in Telugu Tamil and Hindi and hit in Malayalam.

Collections :

Karnataka - ₹ 153.25 Cr

AP/TG - ₹ 130.85 Cr

Tamilnadu - ₹ 97.1 Cr

Kerela - ₹ 57.6 Cr

Rest of India - ₹ 438.15 Cr

Total India - ₹ 876.95

World wide - 1000+ crores

I had no idea that Tamil and Telugu were two different movie industries with two different names. 🤔 So Bahubali, my favorite movie ever, is Telugu -- good to know. That brings me to my next question -- which one is bigger between Tamil and Telugu?

  1. Andhra Pradesh - Tollywood (Telugu film industry)
  2. Tamil Nadu - Kollywood (Tamil film industry)
  3. Karnataka - Sandalwood (Kannada film industry)
  4. Kerela - Mollywood (Malayalam film industry)

After Bollywood its always Tollywood then Kollywood, Mollywood and then Sandalwood.

Malayalam film industry, from Kerala, is quite small. But the movies happen to be in the happy zone between arthouse and commercial. There are some potboilers, but they don't suck up all the oxygen.

And some of the fav Hindi movies of many happen to be remakes of the strictly commercial Malayalam movies. Bhool Bhulaiyya, Drishyam, Hera Pheri...

The actresses are local, at least when it comes to a need for actual acting. The fair-skinned imports are mostly for flowerpot roles. I can't imagine a Nimisha Sijayan or a Parvathy agreeing to play only a love interest.

Actually, Nimisha IS an import. She is a Mumbai Malayali. Grew up there and came to Kerala to act. Her Great Indian Kitchen is being remade in Hindi.

Edited to add: I can't imagine one other film sector where a director goes and announces on TV *I hope my movie prompts a few more divorces.* And that movie became a success.

In fact, I gave you the names of Malayali women. Nothing to do with Tollywood.

well, you dont know me. I make no such stereotypes.... and I am aware of the geography, the politics, the customs, the economies of he different states. More than perhaps some of you! I just don't watch a lot of movies, so hope we dont go exterpolating from there.

conversely, how well do you know other parts of the country? I've seen people here refer to the north or the northeast as if they're all the same. Shouldn't get so uptight. We are all Indians somewhere deep down and thats the case even if not everyone has had the same mobility or exposure to other regions.

1. Not knowing the details is not a big deal. Not everyone is interested or has resources

2. Ignoring it when members tell you there are differences and calling everything Tollywood is being deliberately offensive.

No, I don't know you, but most people recognize mockery.

Maybe i never excelled at the abbreviations and never will when it comes to movies from anywhere. There were other members too and they were all talking their own region. Sorry i lumped my answer together instead of responding individually to each one. Anyway good for you if you think you are so insightful. More power to you.👍🏼
