Background score and Bollywood

Speaking of the North-South film debate in recent times, I feel the massy films of South Industry give a lot of importance to banger background scores. Rightly so, because they have the power to elevate an 'Okay;' scene to a "Wow" scene. Even the recent blockbusters like KGF, Pushpa (specifically the Climax scene) have a bucket of strong background scores going for them! They just enhance the whole theater viewing experience.

Speaking of recent Hindi films, at the top of my head, movies like Uri, Kabir Singh (again a remake) also had powerful background scores. Even SLB movies for that matter have a background score that makes you want to come home and listen to them. A lot of older films gave great importance to BG score and it did work wonders. I sometimes feel they Hindi films of recent times haven't been giving them the importance they deserve, the Bg scores.

Depends upon the type of film being made. Usually massy, big scale movies require strong background score to up the drama and excitement since they are well, mass. So it needs that kind of treatment. But that same type of background score would sound jarring in a less melodramatic, multiplex type film that Bollywood has recently been making for a long time, hence there's less of those heroic and epic level background scores these days since they are more mellow.

I absolutely love SLB for his background music but Gangubai was a massive disappointment. It just didn't fit with the mileu of the film and was too modern. But both Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat had some of the best background scores in Bollywood which was best enjoyed in theatres. Especially the climax of Padmaavat. The whole mixed sound of the Jauhar fire, cries of the women, Khilji running, the coal, the big doors and the folk singers singing Ghani Khamba and Rani Sa...ufff. ❤️ Take the background music out and the whole scene+DP's stoned acting will be completely flat.

Have lost count of the number of times I've listened to it using headphones in loud volume!

I love Hitesh Sonik's work as a background score designer. His work in Kai Po Che was too good!

And then there's obviously Sairat by Ajay Atul 🤩

I haven't watched Gangubai, but totally agree about SLB movies and BGM. It has been so many years, but Ranveer's entry is Bajirao is something I ocassionally revisit, the bg score leaves such a powerful impact on the viewer. Also, Black! What a theme, it was so popular at one point. Even the Deva music of Devdas, though not a fan of the movie, the music does what it needed to. 😆

Ajay-Atul's Agneepath also had a terrific background score. As far as I remember, some of the Subash Ghai movies also used to have nice background themes in movies.

While searching for the Background music of Piku, just revisited this really old channel named IndianMovieBGMs which used to post the collection of BG scores of various movies. Had totally forgotten about that. Nice revisiting it.

Also I think it is needless to mention Swades, just too obvious choice but some of the scenes accompanied with the BG score, still give me goosebumps.

IF is a totally changed place so don't know how to post videos, anymore. smiley24

Some really awesome BGM shared here

I very underrated one is October's theme - it fits so beautifully with the movie

And the most annoying ones are from Rohit Shetty's cop universe. That shrill trumpet playing over and over in every second scene makes the movie more unbearable than it is

On a recent note, Bachchan Pandey's BGM was something very different and fresh. If only the movie had stuff to support it

I haven't watched Bacchan Pandey but it is a remake of Jigarthanda right? That movie had an amazing bg score by Santosh Narayanan.

Speaking of which, I remember reading an article on Baradwaj Rangan's blog on the "sounds" of the movie Jigarthanda, it was such a revealation for me back then in terms of technical aspects of the movie which we barely notice or recognize otherwise. The max we go is by appreciating the cinematography or editing, woh bhi kar le toh badi baat hai, unless something like a Kahaani or Barfi comes in picture and of course Mani Ratnam movies.
