Chalka Chalka Re
Akshara sat at the vanity in her bedroom and stared into the mirror looking back at her reflection. Decked out and bedazzled with ornament jewelry and her red wedding dupatta covering her head she could barely recognize herself, the clumsy girl who loved music and knew tons of home remedies. Today would be the last time she would be known as Akshara Goneka. In a few short hours she would officially become Akshara Birla. The thought sent a jittery nervous spasm into the pit of her stomach. It wasnât fearful nerves, it was excitement of the unknown and this overwhelming emotion of happiness and sorrow. On one hand she was happy that she was marrying the love of her life, Abhimanyu but there was a lingering sense of farewell to her family and the old life that she lived.
She got up from her seat, the red and beige wedding lengha swishing as she walked towards the desk to do one last thing before she was escorted down to the mandap. Picking up a pen and a piece of paper she sat down to write what would be her last letter to her parents in her old room. Mama, Papa today your daughter is going to marry her prince charming. I miss you both so much. I wish you could be here and watch me get married. Actually, I shouldnât say that. You probably are watching over me, arenât you? Sometimes I think that because your time with me was so short that you sent someone to come and take care of me. I want to believe you sent me Abhimanyu. My Abhi. You did, didn't you? Of course you did. Thank you so much. He takes very good care of me and loves me so much. This may be the last letter I write but you are never far from my thoughts. Iâll always be your little girl. I love you. She carefully folded the paper and slipped it into the little drawer where all her other letters reside.
Aksharaâs head turned as she heard the band start to play downstairs indicating Abhimanyu had arrived. Her lips curled upward into a bright smile unable to rest as she knew the timing was drawing nearer to finally being able to see him. She didnât know how she had survived the day before when they were forbidden to see each other until the day of the wedding as per tradition.
Her eyes darted towards her window when she heard a clank and saw a ladder resting against the window pane. âWhoâs there?â
âItâs me bhabhi,â Neil answered as his head popped into view. He climbed into the room and pulled a phone out of his pocket. He fixed his beige sherwani and then spoke to the device, âBro, I made it.â
âAbhi?â she questioned. âWhat are you doing? Weâre not suppose to see each other,â turning away afraid to be seen.
âItâs on speaker Bhabhi,â Neil explained as he handed the phone to her.
âArenât you downstairs performing rituals?â she questioned.
âIâm almost done.â She heard some muffled voices of what sounded like Mimi and Bade Mama.
âAre you seriously walking around downstairs with a phone in your hand?â she berated.
âI have a bluetooth earbud in one of my ears,â Abhimanyu smartly answered. âWe are not supposed to see each other but we can talk.â
âI cannot believe this.â
âNeil.â Abhimanyu ordered. Akshara watched as Neil stuck his fingers in his ear and started to sing to himself. âTere ghar aaya. Main aaya tujhko lene. Dil ke badle mein dil ka nazrana dene [I've come to your house. I've come to take you away. In exchange for your heart I'll give my heart] Meri har dhadkan kya bole haiâŚsun, sun, sun, sun⌠[What is every heartbeat of mine sayingâŚlisten, listen, listen, listenâŚ] Saajanji ghar aaye. Saajanji ghar aaye. Dulhan kyun sharmaye? Saajanji ghar aaye. [Your beloved has come to your house. Your beloved has come to your house. Why is the bride so shy? Your beloved has come to your house]"
âAbhi, I cannot believe you made him come up here.â
âI missed you. You wonât let me hear your voice? You kept rejecting all my calls last night.â
âAbhi, I missed you too. But this is not right what you are doing to Neil.â
âSaajanji ghar aaye. Saajanji ghar aaye. Dulhan kyun sharmaye? Saajanji ghar aaye. [Your beloved has come to your house. Your beloved has come to your house. Why is the bride so shy? Your beloved has come to your house]â
Akshara tapped Neilâs shoulder as he had turned facing the window busily singing. âNeil, Neil, take your fingers out of your ear.â
âYes, Bhabhi?â his eyes flexed in attention awaiting the next set of orders.
Akshara gave a concerned look. âGo back downstairs and take this phone with you. I cannot believe your brother asked you to do this.â
âNeilâŚâ Abhimanyu warned.
âYou should be downstairs with everyone else enjoying the festivities until I get called, okay?â
âNeil, we had a deal.â
âHow could you do that to my Devar?â Akshara complained over the phone. âThat was seriously uncalled for.â
âNeil, hand your Bhabhi back the phone.â
âBro, Bhabhi is looking very beautiful in her wedding lengha,â he answered.
âVery beautiful?â Abhimanyu asked, suddenly distracted.
âHaan, beautiful.â
âCan you take a picture?â
âAbhiâŚâ Akshara sighed. âNo pictures. Youâre going to see me in a few minutes.â
âSorry Bro,â Neil confirmed.
âWhat do you mean sorry?â
âBro, I love you but Iâve been following you all my life. But today, Bhabhi is coming to our house. Someone has to be on her side. Sheâs new to the Birla family and alone.â
âWhat do you mean alone? Iâm going to be her husband. Sheâs not going to be alone,â Abhimanyu replied.
âWhatever Bhabhi tells me to do today Iâll follow.â
âYou canât switch sides like that!â Abhimanyu complained.
Neil just smiled and whispered, âDonât worry Iâll make sure the shoes are found.â Akshara laughed while he gave a wink in return.
âNeil? Did I just hear you say youâre going to give away my shoes?â
Both Akshara and Neil shared a laugh at the way Abhimanyu was getting overly concerned over the phone. They turned their heads when the bedroom door suddenly opened. Kairav and Vansh walked in surprised to see Neil in the room. âWhat are you doing here?â Kairav questioned. He then shook his head when he heard the voice of his soon to be brother-in-law. âAbhi, you are that impatient?â
They could hear a pause of confusion on the other end as he tried to figure out why there was another voice in the room causing everyone to snicker in silence. âKairav?â
âYes, and you should not be talking to my sister,â he threatened. âWe were here to take her downstairs but nowâŚwhat do you think Bhaiya?â
âI agree, Kairav,â Vansh teased. âWe can make him waitâŚone hour, two hoursâŚwe have some time.â
âBut, thatâs not fair. Iâm down here. This is our wedding dayâŚâ Abhimanyu sputtered, making everyone laugh.
âBye Abhi, see you later,â Akshara answered and hung the phone up.
âIâll take my leave now,â Neil nodded and started to head towards the window.
âNeil, what are you doing? You can go downstairs from my room.â
âDonât you think it will look a little odd?â he replied.
âI agree,â Kairav chimed in. âIt may cause Bade Papa and AG to wonder why he was up here.â
âIâll see you all soon,â Neil waved and climbed out the window.
Akshara turned back at her brother and suddenly felt a wave of emotions as her eyes began to tear. âAkshuâŚâ he replied and came forward to give her a hug. He pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket and handed it to her. Vansh knowing the siblings needed a few minutes together quietly guestered to Kairav that he would be outside waiting. âDonât cry, Akshu,â he soothed. âThis is the happiest day for youâŚitâs your wedding day.â
âI know Bhaiya. Iâm very happy but Iâm also sad too,â she replied as she tried to gain control of her tears.
âYou miss them?â Kairav questioned.
âI do,â she answered and then broke from his hug. She walked towards the photo of their parents. âI wished they were here.â
Putting his hands on her shoulders he nodded, âAs do I. I know right now they are probably the happiest souls up in heaven because their Akshu is getting married. They are giving their blessing to you from up above.â
Akshara nodded, âI feel that way too.â
There was a gentle knock on the door causing the siblings to turn to see Manish and AG standing at the door. âReady?â Manish asked. He had seen his granddaughter earlier in the day in her wedding lengha and had been stunned that his little girl was now this grown woman getting ready to get married. There was a gentle ache in his heart that he would no longer be able to hear her singing in the mornings, her laughter in the afternoons, and receive her goodnight hugs before going to bed. He watched as she rushed towards the vanity to check her makeup one final time before beaming a smile,âIâm ready Bade Papa.â She rushed towards him giving him a tight hug before moving onto AG, Vansh, and then Kairav.
The four Goenka men looked at each other and grinned as they started the process of escorting her out of the room and down to the stairs. There was a sense of pride and joy on their faces as they held the heavily embezzled red dupatta over Akshara. Everyone took steady matching steps as they made their way to their destination. A low hush fell in the room as everyone slowly started to realize the bride was coming. Guests craned their necks to see Akshara in her red and beige lengha. She seemed to sparkle as she glided her way down the path towards the mandap; her payals twinkling a melodious sound with each step she took.
Akshara eyes shyly looked up to see Abhimanyu in his wedding sherwani looking ever so handsome as she had imagined he would look. The joy in his eyes knew no bounds as their eyes met confirming that this was no dream. The day they had longed for was becoming a reality. She heard some teasing words from her family members, close guests, and friends making her cheeks feel uncomfortably warm. It wasnât long before she was brought forward holding a fresh garland of flowers. Abhimanyu stood in front of her almost in a trace as if he was having a hard time understanding what he should be doing until Parth elbowed him, waking him from his daydream. Akshara chuckled, causing him to pout.
âDonât just stand there and put the flowers on her,â Parth commanded.
âJust one second,â Arohi stated as she stood in front of Akshara with her arms out in a blocking motion. Askahra saw the concern she felt in Abhimanyuâs eyes as her sister stood in front of them. âI think there has to be a negotiation,â she continued.
âThatâs right,â Anisha, Shefali, and Nishtha agreed as they stood next to Arohi.
âNegotiation? What negotiation?â Parth questioned.
Nishtha rubbed her thumb back and forth between her index and middle finger. âMoney? This only happens if you find my shoes,â Abhimanyu answered, perplexed. âIâm still wearing mine. And why are you standing over there?â
âHave you guys defected?â Parth gasped. âYouâre supposed to be on the boyâs side.â
âWe decided to be on the girls' side instead,â Shefali answered.
âAnd we are here to negotiate for double,â Anisha explained.
âYou promise to give double now then we will let you put that garland on Akshara,â Arohi matter of factly stated.
Akshara bit back her laughter as Abhimanyu hurriedly agreed to the conditions they were putting forth. He shooed them away with his hand so the space was clear again. Just as he was about to place the garland over her head she felt a tiny push making her fall towards him. She heard a rowdy roar of whistles and cheers as she landed on his chest. She glanced upward to see even Abhimanyu was feeling embarrassed. He quickly placed the flowers over her head and beamed a proud smile as all the guests clapped. Now, it was her turn. She raised her arms upward only to see Abhimanyu being picked up just slightly so she couldnât put it over his head. The boyâs side cheered and laughed at her attempts. Akshara caught Neil stepping on Parthâs foot making him lose balance causing Abhimanyu to drop back down. He winked at her, making her give a thankful smile. Akshara reached out and dropped the garland over Abhimanyuâs head causing all the guests to cheer and clap. Akshara and Abhimanyu both looked at each other with bright smiles and love in their eyes that they were one step closer to becoming husband and wife.
