Happy Women’s Day to all women out there!

I don’t really believe in celebrating Men’s or Women’s day but since Maddam Sir is mainly a story about four fearless female cops, I thought why not make a post about it.

I will be honest that I started watching this show not because it was a comedy show or gave social messages but only because there is limited content on ITV where we see women doing anything else rather than crying or being a superwoman ideal ‘Bahu’. What kept me hooked was each character had their own struggles but still stood strong smiling against all odds life thre at them.

I thought of making this post for the strong women this show gave us.

Warning: It’s really a long rant so you can skip it!

Haseena Mallik, she was the first character I fell in love with. She is the best example of how not to let the world make you hard, how not to let the pain make you hate and how not to let bitterness steal your sweetness. Life has never been kind to her. She lost her father at very young age, had to work from childhood to take care of her livelihood along with her mother and studies, was rejected for marriage several times, was questioned by society for not getting married at so-called right age, was betrayed and heartbroken twice, had to doubt her own uncle for her duty, was accused of corruption and dishonesty multiple times, had to face situations where MPT was being shut-down several times, had to face days when her own team was against her, was shot by a robot whom she trained like a child and for whom went against her own people, had to live her life behind and hurt her dear ones for sake of her duty and what not. But everytime life threw problems at her, she emerged stronger than before. A perfect combination of a compassionate heart with a fierce and determined mind. Her politeness and etiquette have my heart. We haven’t seen a single episode where she complained why life has been so cruel to her. Even in tough situations, she had gathered her courage and motivated her juniors as well. She was there for Karishma everytime she felt low, stood by her and protected her for every mistake she made, encouraged her and forgave her for all her childishness without a single thought. She encouraged Pushpa Ji when she was demotivated. She encouraged Santu to overcome her fears. In short, she has all the qualities a great leader should possess. And not to mention how she takes care of Billu. And the best part of character is she has complete control over her emotions, a very rare character trait. She has been so reserved that I wished for scenes where she could open-up and speak her heart out. And behind that mature, level-headed, calm Haseena Mallik lies a very playful, full of life Haseena whom we saw as Urmilla or sometimes as drunk Haseena. Well let me stop here as I can write a novel on Haseena. Summing up her character with lines,

Thodi sifa toh hum bhi rakhte hain ae game-e-dard tujse muqabil hone ki,

Ki tu bhi tu aaya hai samne humari shorat dekhkar

Karishma Singh, as mentioned by Gulki, hum sab ki favorite. She is the most liked character despite her flaws and that’s what makes her beautiful. Our bhaukali devi. She was introduced as a tough cop who could cross all the boundaries to serve justice. The love and respect she has for duty is condemnable. Of course she has anger issues, she is impulsive, she doesn’t have a filter while speaking out the truth, she has her own flaws but she learns from them and grows everyday. We all know when we are wrong but it takes a lot of courage to accept it and apologize. But this girl does it every time! She has learnt from every mistake she committed. She is the one who will never let anything wrong happen with anyone, no matter what it takes. What more a great quality can a person possess. Life has not been easy for her as well. Her parents were financially poor to admit her to the best school of her town. She saw her parents struggle everyday to fight for life. She was laughed at for not being able to speak fluent English. She had to work on the streets to fulfill her dream of serving her country and still couldn’t appear for the IPS exam. The society was against her because she was a girl. Still she didn’t give up and successfully became an SI. Despite all the odds, she achieved what she wanted. A perfect inspiration to everyone out there. And then she made sure no one underwent the same pain she had gone through. She helps everyone who needs it without being asked to do it. Behind the ruthless cop, there is Karishma Singh who has so much love hidden inside her. Her love for her husband cannot be described in words. She not only loves him, she idolizes him. And more than her husband, she loves her mother-in-law. Touch Pushpa Ji and she will make you see hell. She is a tight slap to all those who say working women cannot be a good wife and daughter-in-law. Well we have the best example here! And what I love most about her is that she accepts the truth despite the person standing in front of her. She followed Haseena whenever she felt it’s right even when she hated her and stood against Anubhav, a brother who is her world when she felt he was wrong. Nothing comes above her principles and duty. She is an inspiration to so many girls who want to fulfill their dreams. I know she made mistakes but she learnt from them and trust me very few of us can do that.

Santosh Sharma, the character I think grew the most with time. Her journey amazes me. From a girl who was not allowed to go to school to a girl who is an excellent cyber-expert and cop today. Dangerous combination of innocence with danger. If the cruel world couldn’t snatch away her innocence and purity then the narrow-minded society also could not stop her from fulfilling her dreams. Her first struggle started from her home itself when she wasn’t given permission to study but how tactfully did she overcome that situation. From being molested at a very young age to overcoming her fears, she has come a long way. She was the same girl who got scared by some eve-teasers during the start of the show and today she fights against anyone like we saw in the hair-cutting criminal case. She mentioned it a few times that emotional blackmail from her father did not stop her from doing what she wanted. That’s how strong she is! And not to forget the way she has handled things after Haseena’s death. It seems the young girl is managing everything all alone. Her life has just started but the way she is trying to make her place in this world is really appreciable.

Pushpa Ji the character who seems to be comic from surface but if you drive deep, you cannot stop from admiring her. Even at this age, she has kept the child inside her alive. She lost her husband at a very young age, was abandoned by her in-laws because she wanted to become a cop, and brought up her son all alone with strong moral values. She is not only a dutiful police-officer but an ideal woman as well. If everyone gets mother-0in-law like her, no girl would be afraid of getting married. She loves Karishma more than her own son. She gave sky to her to fly. She supported her when everyone was against her and reprimanded her when she was wrong. She has been Hassena’s mother, Santu’s support, Cheetah’s motivator.Even if people opposed her, all she gave was only love. This lady is so lovely. And even after going through so much, all she does is make people around her laugh. She carries very strong positive vibesaround her that can light up your world.

So my hands are in pain now. Wrapping up with ‘A very happy women's day’. Cheers 🍻 to all off us!

This was such a beautiful dedication to the characters. As I always say, the show has its flaws, yet there is no denying that it is still way better than the garbage that we see on popular ITV channels. This show has my heart and I love it with all its goodness and flaws combined.

On that note, a very happy women's day to you all. May we become the biggest supporters in each and every women's life so that we all can achieve our dreams together.

How amazingly written! I absolutely adore the show, and maybe that's why I rant so much, because I can't stop caring about it.

It's one of the rare ITV gems that focuses on women's role and contribution in their workplace, instead of their arguments and chores at home.

Happy Women's Day! Cheers to stepping outside of boundaries, and pushing fellow women ever farther ahead. Win for one is a win for all.

With time I learnt, each and every show will their flaws, like we humans have. But what makes me love this show is makers haven't described their characters as white and black.

Every character have thier own struggles. They all made mistakes at one point and then learnt from it. And that's why no character of this show is hated. Of course we all have all favorites but it's characters built-up that makes all love others as well. Agreed there are episodes where we side with one character and get disappointed with other but the very next episode, we end up loving them again.

Finally a break from typical lead and villain story where villains are there only for plotting and leads are only for setting things right! I hope we had more humane characters on ITV!
