The movie's hype was so less but it went on to become cult classic. I think this film laid the foundation for colloquial type movies and series ( mirzapur, sacred games).

When I tried to watch it first time I was shocked at the sheer amount of abuses and slangs and couldn't care to watch, much later I found DD1 cut version of the film and finally was able to watch.

The films were anything like Bollywood style, the deglam looking actors ( average looking?), documentary style cinematography and very unhinge and rustic approach.

Lol it earned me a long stare from my brother when I blurted Ive watched the films apparently for being a good kid 😆

I loved the series. Mainly because I enjoy elaborate family dramas with a large ensemble cast where every character gets their moment to shine.

However, what I do want to point out is that GoW is an indulgent film. And Anurag Kashyap (atleast in this film) is as much of an indulgent filmmaker as KJo and SLB. The difference is the latter two are indulgent with costumes and sets whereas Kashyap indulges in gore and obscenity- a large part of which IMO could have been done without.

Agree with you on being indulgent. Though it differed from what was the norm of the day back then. Even thriller films used to have this glamorous, amorous characters, but what set GOW was the character who were earthy, rustic and total lack of finesse and grace.

Sardar Khan is totally different from Ranadhir Singh yet they have some common elements like greediness, hunger for power and stubbornness.
