Lack Of Massy Heroines In Bollywood

There is a clear visible lack of massy heroines in Bollywood right now. The current lot of new generation of actresses do not have that popularity among the masses. The last heroines who had some kind of mass appeal were Katrina and Deepika. Alia and Shraddha have but I don't think to that extent. But the newer lot has no connect among the masses. One example of mass popularity is being the poster girl in salons of small towns. Also, being poster girl in someone's bedroom shows your popularity. These are the examples which show how much masses love you. This also adds to their star power, because masses will go to see their films which is important for films to be big hits. What's your take on this ?

OTT platforms and cheap data plans disbanded the 'masses'. Friday releases aren't that big of a deal anymore like they used to be so I don't think it has much to do with actresses.

Because they don't want to be the "massy" heroine. Like Taapsee & Sanaya recently said on Anupama's show, they feel blessed to be in an era where they have a lot more opportunity especially with the emergence of OTT instead of playing the hero's "love interest" + 2 songs. There's always the Jackie's & Nora's for the item numbers anyways.

Agreed.

Nowadays most mainstream BW actresses come in one of three categories:

. Nepos with little to no talent/charisma/sex appeal who tend to get the best parts.

. Good looking girls with sex appeal who can't act for shit and there for get relegated to flowerpot roles/item songs/flop type films (or can act fairly decently but get relegated to flowerpot roles/item songs/flop type films anyway because the good roles need to be reserved for nepos, remember).

. Talented actresses who don't have the looks/energy necessary to appeal to the masses in that sense, and therefor stick to serious/arty/de-glam roles and movies.

When this is how things are, how is any actress going to achieve that level of stardom?

That said, even now I do think out of the current generation, Shraddha, Disha and now increasingly Tara as well do have considerable popularity among the masses.

I can see Sara gunning for that spot and I know she's not popular on IF but she does have a lot of fans in the heartland. I think that's who her strange 'namaste darshako' SM persona is geared towards.

Heh? AFAIK, mass movies don't credit their female leads with the power to open well. So if the movies flop, blame the *mass* hero. As per prevailing wisdom, the ladies don't contribute. If the men take the credit, they also get the blame.

Facts.

There are no Madhuris, Sridevis, Kajols, Karishmas, Hemas, Rekhas, Deepikas, Katrinas etc now.

There are just few types of hot, cute girls or those who do offbeat roles. There is not even a Rani, Preity, Vidya, Raveena level type heroine now.

No actress with mass appeal across generations and all sections of society and none whose posters are at every store, parlour, vendor, auto, rickshaw, hostel rooms. None has sway over masses.

There is not even anyone with fascination for looks like Aishwarya, Madhubala, Hema anymore.

Today there is not a single actress who can draw masses to cinema halls on her name or overshadow even heroes or make film work with just her presence. No Zeenat, Parveen or Bipasha type appeal either.

Just usual types, some of who would even work well on TV since they have no charisma anyway for big screen.

There is a vacuum when it comes to female superstars now. None of them has an irreplaceable quality.
