There is absolutely no 90s-early 2000s without Udit Narayan. The most original and fresh male voice of Bollywood and someone who was not subconsciously or consciously trying to copy Kishore, Rafi or Mukesh the way other singers used to copy past legends knowingly or unknowingly.

No body beats Udit in singing erotic type songs either. His voice in Dhak Dhak karne laga, Tip Tip barsa pani is proof.

Or even his voice in underdog kind of songs like Jawan ho yaaron yeh tumko hua kya in JJWS.

He has perfectly nailed the desperation, fear and hope in O Paalanhare song in Lagaan or the anticipation in Ghanan Ghanan song - none of which are romantic songs at all.

I cannot believe 90s icons are being degraded or ignored to somehow prop up a former duplicate of Rafi who is hardly getting films nowadays.

I was born much later so I never got to enjoy 90s songs but I still remember my intro to Khambe Jaisi Khadi.

It was in dance class (not school wala) and we were being taught some steps on the rock and roll beat. Then our sir played this song and I couldn't stop dancing 😆

That song's still very popular amongst bands and in fests. There are clips on YouTube if you want to check them out.

@bold: So true! With those two songs, it was very easy to go overboard and make it uncomfortable for listeners. But there was something about Udit's voice, he sang it with class. Of course that does not take away from Anuradha ji's magic.

90s were the last decade where everyone could enjoy the songs. 2000-2009, I won't say the songs were bad, but they were so westernized that only a certain section of audience would enjoy it. In fact if I ever go out of the house early in the morning for a walk, all the fruitwalas, doodhwalas, newspaper wale bhaiyas listen to 90s songs, along with 50s-70s (the Golden Age).

To be blunt, 90s singers cannot have their talent doubted just because different kind of content was not made then.

2000s music is more experimental because films were also more experimental then.

But the way all versatile composers and singers of 90s have been ignored conveniently it seems the intention is to cock a snoot at decade in which a fav singer was only known as duplicate for Rafi in T series cassettes and a TV anchor of a singing reality show.

Some singers have such uniqueness in their own voice that they don't feel the need to sound different.

It is a FACT. On tea stalls, radio stations, at dhabas, trucks, music of 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s is way more popular with masses than music post 2000s. Regional music has also been more popular than Bollywood music post 2000s/2010s.

Masses such as your local building's watchman, tea stall owner, roadside dhabas do not connect much to latest music the way they connect to yesteryear music.
