Udit's songs from even a flop film like Deewana Mujhsa nahi, Afsana pyar ka etc kept Aamir afloat when he was giving strong of flops before Dil saved his career.
If singer did not matter then why Aamir used Udit for his films till 2001?
Jaane kyu was a bigger hit from DCH. Sung by Udit of course. All songs of Lagaan are by Udit for Aamir. Why Aamir chose Udit to sing all songs for him in his first home production is evident.
Udit is versatile and ORIGINAL. Not a copycat or duplicate or mimic of other singers.
He has sung funny/silly songs for Govinda films also be it Kisi disco mein jaye, Asi chutki nabbe taal, Ram Narayan baja bajaata etc.
He has sung hit songs for even Rajinikanth in his 90s hits like Mutthu and Baasha in Tamil. Baasha song sung by Udit is not romantic BTW, that song by Udit was more of a comment on stages of life.
Udit can change his voice. He can sound as boyish as he wants for younger or college kid songs and as manly, mature as he wants for mature/older situations/characters.

Udit, Vinod Rathod and Kumar Sanu have all sang fab songs for Govinda. The music directors responsible used them very well.

Udit Narayan easily brought out madness and comedy of Govinda in films like Saajan Chale Sasural, Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan with songs like Ram narayan baja bajaata, Oye Makhna, Assi chutki nabbe taal ragadke peeda muh mein daal, Kisi disco mein jayein, Main tera Hero #1 etc. Tapori songs? Udit gave Yaaron sunlo zara, which is Aamir's iconic act as Munna in Rangeela.
