No, ranbir kapoor is not a superstar. 'Star' and 'Superstar' are very loosely used terms used randomly by the media ( maybe due to a lot of pr machineries ). First we need to understand when are actors called stars and when they are called superstars, in terms of films. Its like Actor, then Star and then finally Superstar, step by step, a chain.
An 'Actor' is someone, of course, who acts.
A 'Star' is that actor who is commercially, economically saleable and viable. Someone who is bankable and popular, someone who appeals to the audience, whom the audiences identify and will go to cinema halls to see the picture, someone who has got name value and face value. Thus, a 'Star' has got box office pull, no matter to what extent.
Now comes a 'Superstar'. A 'Superstar' is that Big Star who roars at the ticket windows. Someone whose name and mere presence is enough to make a big difference in the sellng price of a film. Someone whose face in the poster is enough to draw audiences to the theatres, a crowd puller. Someone who dominates the posters of his films. Someone who is extremely and immensely popular both among masses and classes, and can give huge first weekend numbers not depending on the content of the film always. Someone who can sell his own films. Someone on whose name distributors pick up films, sometimes not even bothering about the content. To become a Superstar, one has to become that big elusive hugely popular genuinely legit real box-office star. A Star who falls under the top bracket has to deliver hits after hits, superhits after superhits, and blockbusters after blockbusters, actually ruling the box - office, to reach the Superstar level.
Now in ranbir's case, he came close to that after the success of yeh jawaani hai deewani. There was a craze in the youth which purely reflects in the excellent opening numbers of besharam. But the picture flopped and so was his next few films like roy, bombay velvet ( bombay velvet was a very big disaster ) and tamasha. Thus, he couldn't consolidate his success and the craze vanished, though he is still popular. After that 3 of his films released in a span of 3 years. Out of which, ae dil hai mushkil and sanju became successful, while jagga jasoos which released in between them flopped. And its been 3 years none of his films released. Stars have Stardom, Superstars have Superstardom. As of now, we can't say that ranbir has superstardom. He has not yet seen or experienced box office superstardom so far. Thus, coming to a conclusion, he is not yet a Superstar.
