IF YOU WANT FORGIVENESS
Raavi left the room when Shiva asked for forgiveness; it was too overwhelming for her. She did not know how to react to what Shiva has said, it was too much for her.
He was genuinely sorry for what he had done, not just recently but since childhood. This made Raavi relieved because of the fact that Shiva knows he wronged her. She wanted to rush back to the room and hug him, make him believe that she also wants to save this relationship but something inside her was telling her to take things slow.
She thought of talking to Shiva and clear the plethora of doubts that she was having from that single sorry that Shiva has said a few minutes back.
“I need to forgive him.” She said it out loud but she was alone so nobody heard it.
The moment she entered the room, she saw Shiva waiting for her near the bedside.
“Why did you run away?” He asked immediately standing up.
“It was too much for me.” She said without making eye contact.
“I know. I am sorry for making it overwhelming for you. I wish I could do something to make things simpler for you.” He said it in one go.
Just then, the lightbulb in Raavi’s brain started working at a fast pace. She realised what she needs to do to make Shiva get her acceptance.
“You can actually do something.” Raavi said to a totally confused Shiva.
“What?”
“There are three things that you can do.” She said.
“Gadhedi has gone mad. It has taken me so long to say a single sorry, now she wants me to do three things. I guess we need to take a rebirth to stay together.” Shiva thought to himself.
“You left me alone in that market, now it is time for you to make up for it. You have to do something that will make me feel safe.” Raavi said with her eyes getting watery as she remembered that fateful day.
Shiva couldn’t look into her eyes but simply nodded.
“You gave me divorce in front of everyone, said our shadi is over in front of this whole world. Now you have to make sure the same world knows that I am your wife. And remember you cannot take help from our family.” Raavi declared.
She was leaving the room when he stopped her.
“What is the third thing?” He asked.
“You have to figure that out on your own.” Raavi winked and left the room.
The whole night Shiva did not get an ounce of sleep. He was thinking of so many things that have happened in the past few days.
“There is so much happening in the whole family and now this chipkali has given me these strange conditions in order to get her to forgive me.” He thought to himself and just then, he remembered all the times in the haveli when she used to get afraid of dark. He realised that he used to be her safe haven at that time. He saw the light of Raavi’s room still on.
“She is still sleeping with lights on.” He said to himself and got up from the cot to go back to the place where he knows he belongs.
He knocked on the door and Raavi opened it after 3-4 knocks.
“It is so late, I was sleeping. What do you want?” She asked rubbing her eyes.
“I want to sleep here.” Shiva said and went to the bed without any further ado.
Raavi saw him lying down on the bed and did not have the power to argue because she was too sleepy. She went to sleep next to him. She closed her eyes with a little smile evident on her face knowing that Shiva was looking at her.
“Switch off the lights.” She said.
This brought a huge smile on his face which was conveying victory. He did not say anything but in his heart he knew that she is now feeling safe with him but more than that, she was his saviour.
Next day, Shiva was leaving for the store when Raavi stopped him.
“Shiva, your tea and sandwich is on the table. Eat it and then go.” Raavi said it from the kitchen.
Suman was seeing all this. She was happy that things are getting back to normal in their life but she still had that feeling of uneasiness when it comes to seeing these two together.
“You are on the verge of becoming Petticoat chaap No. 1.” Suman said this which surprised Shiva. He almost choked on the tea that he was drinking.
“What are you saying, mom?”
“I am saying what will happen in the future.” After saying this, Suman left the room.
Shiva went to the kitchen to keep the dishes when he saw Raavi doing everything in a haphazard manner.
“You are so organised always. What has happened now?”
“I have a class at 9 and it is already 830. I need to be in college asap.”
“I will drop you. On your bike if you are comfortable.” Shiva said while doing the dishes.
Raavi’s eyes were filled with a twinkle after seeing Shiva doing dishes, offering to drop her and to top it all, coming back to the room.
“Sure. I will get my bag and the keys.”
“Yeah. Till then, I will do all the dishes.”
The bike ride was filled with their talk about what he needs to bring at home from the store, Raavi telling him about her favourite lecture.
“Have a good day.” Shiva said.
“You too.” Raavi said.
Shiva was about to leave when he was stopped by one of his friends who was a lecturer in the college.
“You are here to drop Krish?” She asked.
Shiva smiled and said, “No, I am here to drop Raavi, she is my wife.”
Raavi was proud of the way he introduced her. She felt a splurge of emotions seeing him talking to his friend and making sure Raavi was a part of their discussion.
“Would love to have you at our home. Please plan something.” Raavi said.
“Definitely. Anyway, I will see you two again.” With that his friend left.
“I will also leave. Bye again.” Shiva said.
“Shiva”
Shiva looked at her and asked her what.
“Thank you! And listen I will be free by 1. Come and pick me up.”
“Oh oh!!! Chipkali is ordering me now.”
“I can order my husband. I have that right over you.” She declared and left a stumped Shiva on the college gate.
The whole time at the store, Shiva was thinking about his interaction with Raavi. “What should I do to make sure she forgives me and why am I going crazy about it?” He thought to himself.
Just then, it struck him that he was running late to pick her up. He told Dev that he will be back in some time and left for her college.
It was 1.15 when he reached the college and he saw Raavi waiting for him.
“Sorry, sorry, sorry!!! I did not realise the time while working.”
“It is okay, Shiva. You are here albeit a little late but what matters is you are here, with me.” Raavi pacified him.
The whole way back they discussed how their respective day went by.
Suman spotted them talking near the entrance door. “Once upon a time, Shiva was not a petticoat chaap.” She said it out loud for both of them to hear it.
Shiva and Raavi entered the house. Raavi left the room to freshen up while Shiva wanted to say something to his mother but decided to ignore it. He was about to leave for the shop when Suman started talking.
“You are sure this girl won’t leave you again.” Suman said out loud for the whole house to listen. Raavi came out along with Dhara, Krish and Gautam.
“Mom, what are you saying?” Shiva asked her.
“This is the same girl who slapped you, disrespected you, made you feel worthless and you are making googly eyes at her. Have you lost your brain?”
“Mom, please. This is enough. I was equally responsible for whatever has happened; in fact more than that…I created the circumstances, questioned her character when I know how pious her thought process is. I forced her to sign the divorce papers when I knew it in my heart that she wanted our marriage to work. So if you want to blame anyone for the failure that our relationship is, it is me. Not Raavi.” Shiva said everything while looking at Raavi.
Dhara, Gautam and Krish were proud of the fact that he accepted his mistake and was willing to work on it.
“You are speaking like your other brothers who will do anything for their wives. Them I understand but you, not so much. She doesn’t love you, respect you…” Shiva interrupted Suman before she could continue.
“She respects me more than I respect myself and for the time being, it is enough.” With that Shiva left the house and a very angry Suman.
Dev and Shiva came back from the shop. Raavi knew that Kaaki is angry from them but she did not want Shiva to lose his temper also. She thought that giving them time will help in solving matters.
Raavi was arranging the room when Shiva entered the room.
“I want to apologise for what mom said in the morning.” Shiva said surprising Raavi.
Raavi tried to lighten the atmosphere. “Oh ho, Mr. Shiva Pandya is on an apologising spree for the past two days.”
Shiva just looked at her and was trying to understand what is going on in her hand.
“I can never understand you. You are weird.” With that, he went to his side of the bed and just sat there.
“Do not ever call our relationship a failure again” she said and Shiva could feel the tears building up in her eyes.
Raavi came and sat near him. This time, she took the initiative and held his hand. “It is our relationship, our marriage…it doesn’t matter what were the circumstances under which we got married but trust me when I am saying this, I wouldn’t want it otherwise…”
Shiva interrupted her but she put a finger on his lips and told him “no” with a shake of her head, telling him that she won’t stop talking till she is finished.
“You have saved me, not just in that temple but otherwise also. You made me realise what I have. Apologies are a part of making a relationship work and promise me one thing.”
Shiva asked with a nudge of his head.
“You will not wait for so long to say sorry. In fact both of us should promise each other that we will never sleep angry with each other.”
Shiva just smiled at her innocence. “Promise.” He said and hugged her.
“Don’t you want to apologise for anything?” Shiva asked her while still hugging her.
“Yes. But it was your day today. I will start with my apology tomorrow.”
“By the way, what was the third thing that I was supposed to do?” Shiva asked Raavi while still holding her close from the waist.
Raavi just smiled and hugged him again, knowing that the bulb in his brain will also work one day. Till then, she will be happy with what she has.
