As I saw, that people are giving real life examples, I will also share a story that I have witnessed.

Guy from UK, marries girl in Pakistan coz' his family wants him to. I actually met the girl five years after her marriage once she started working to get an extra income in the family. She was a lovely, extremely innocent mother of two. As she started getting closer to the other staff at our workplace she started telling us her story. Living in London, with her mother-in-law, father-in-law, her husband, his bitchy unmarried sister and her two kids. All the money she made (and a large part of her husband's salary) went to her mother-in-law, all her rare phone calls were listened in to, and she was not allow to play with her kids kids or even take care of the girl (just the girl, coz the boy was looked after by the grandma) until all her chores were done. So on top of working full time, she did all the house chores. That poor girl had not even seen the center of London (except in her cab ride from the airport) and she NEVER in her five years of marriage went out with her husband (be it restaurant, cinema or just a car ride, and of course was not allowed to go anywhere by herslef). After five years of marriage, she found out that her husband was a smoker. And after five years, when she met the other married women at the work place she realised that a marriage was not what she had. So once she got an increase she asked the management to give the extra money to her in cash. When she went to Pakistan for a holiday (yes, after five years and two kids she got the right to go visit her family, oh, not with her husband of course but with her father-in-law), she made sure to buy gifts with the extra money that she secretly saved up, for her own kids to later tell her mother in law that her parents made a gesture (otherwise, as you must imagine, she would have had to listen to a lot, but coming from a poor - poor to UK standards - family, her parents could not afford to give gold to all of their grandchildren - they had many).

I am sorry, you are talking about different times and civilised countries, but even in London you get to witness such slavery (I call it slavery, yes, coz' she is nothing else but a maid to the family. The little amount of respect she got was only because she started working and bringing in an income, well, during the period she worked, she gained a minimum of self esteem and confidence to talk to her husband about all her problems, not that he dared doing anything about it coz' the mamma's boy was so scared of mamma, but I guess that was a proggress).

And althought everyone at the workplace knew that her husband had another girlfriend (that he apparantly had had for more than five years), noone dared telling her, one less worry in that poor helpless girl's head.

well, that is not somthing happening everywhere, its one case. it doesn't happen everywhere, so you cann't say that it happens with all arrange marriages.
