Dev is a genuinely nice guy. He can be very helpful, kind and considerate. He is beloved by all his employees, he is very caring towards his family. He works hard not because he himself loves his materialistic pleasures, but so he can provide as much as possible for his family. S1 shows how Sona sees his qualities and slowly, steadily falls in love with him. He didn't have time or the luxury to think or wonder about emotions like love, but when he did fall in love, he fell deeply and irrevocably. He loves Sona immensely, she is the center of his universe.
He has his set of flaws, which probably sets him apart from other ITV male leads who are perfect in all ways. Dev is not. He can be rude, ruthless, has anger issues, he makes short-term decisions without thinking through consequences, especially when it involves his mother. His main issue is his upbringing, his mental conditioning by his mother, which pulls him in directions that he himself rather not go. He couldn't bear to part with Sona, but he did, for his mother.
You see, Sona was HIS, his own happiness. His own happiness can never be greater than his mother and his family. So Sona can never be prioritized over his family. That is the fact of the matter. Sona also understands this. She never asks to be placed in that position either, because she is well aware that Dev, even if he wanted to, can't do it. It does not mean he doesn't love her or care about her, because he does, she knows that. But she is his own love, his life, which will never be prioritized over his duties and responsibilities.
There were instances in S1 where he behavior was abominable. The farmhouse scene was his absolute lowest point. He does apologize to Sona in the same farmhouse 7 years later and wonders why she is with him, why she helps him and his family, when he was never able to be with her and support her as she needed. What the writers failed to do was address those particular instances and have him apologize properly, but I guess the writers didn't want Dev to be too apologetic, or what? I don't know? ML syndrome?🙄
Asha's death: Dev shared a very lovely bond with Sona's mother. Asha truly understood Dev, sometimes even more than Sona. So saying that he didn't know she was sick and just left when Asha was dying, is something no fan of Kuch Rang will be able to digest. No way. Dev was simply not that person. The writers messed up big time when they just showed a casual "he left for seminar", instead of spending some episodes showing exactly what happened. Dev stayed with Ayush's grandfather when he was in the hospital, but left Asha? No way. She was his favorite Bose girl. But oh well, the writers wrapped up a good and interesting track in a hurry, just to bring in this Serendipity woman. 🤷♀️
My personal interpretation/justification from that half-baked Asha story the writers threw at us is this: Asha may have taken a turn for the worse when he left, and died. He would have come back right away, but wasn't there with Sona when that moment happened. He understood Sona's pain of losing her mother, but didn't realize the anger that was due to his absence in that specific moment. He probably thought he needed to give her space and with time, the wound festered making it worse for their relationship.
Why he left in the first place, when she was in the hospital, I cannot come up with any explanation for it other than the writers just wanted some weird drama. S1 Dev would not have left. 🤷♀️ But the writers are excellent in inconsistencies. So maybe this was the Dev who didn't check up on Sona for 7 long years🤷♀️, which I found highly improbable back then as well.🤷♀️
As I said in my last post....it wasn't just Asha's death. She was treated unfairly in Ayush matter as well. I couldn't fathom why is she still with him.
