The typical Indian patriachy has a list of expectations on women. I'm choosing 5
1.a woman after marriage has to give it her all to be accepted into the family she married into.
Anu has given it all and continues to do so but still is not accepted
2.husband is the Lord and master and she the lesser human in the equation.
3. The woman has to kill her dreams and choose careers that doesn't impinge on the needs and expectations of her husband, his parents siblings and her progeny.
4. The man and his family have the right to say anything to and she needs to treat it as her blessing.
5. The woman can sing not dance. She can walk but not talk, she cook not claim her right of choice. She cannot be ahead of her man. Kavya can do all she likes and still called the bahu lovingly and accepted with open arms
Anupama was conditioned to abide by the dictates of the Shahs and she willingly did it even as a teen. So much so she is unable to say no to Bapuji after the divorce too. A woman like Anupama who spends more time in her married home and gets adapted to the reethi and neethi of her new family. She drops her maiden name and adopts the new one. Anupama by calling Vanraj Mr Shah and insisting he called her Anupama was stepping out of the identity imposed on her.
Anupama s needs and desires were never voiced or considered. Till the revelation the family ate even the parathas he liked and others were not even made. By making other Parathas she was aderting her right over the kitchen. By cooking but not serving him by refusing to do his aarthik as baa wanted him to by performing Pujas and marriage rituals on her own she refused to conform to the second citizen position. It maybe more the doing of others than her choice but she went on with things.
At every stage anipamas dancing skills were insulted, the gunghuroo destroyed, her teaching commitments and awards were made to look like nothing. Post the silver jubilee she took on roles outside, saved children by her presence of mind and did not succumb to the family pressure and stop speaking the truth. It was her stance that put safety as a key component in that school. She rescripted policy in her own way and did not need the support of Vanraj in it.
Anupama ensured she woke up early to complete the domestic chores without any compromise. Vanraj hasn't been able to insist kavya makes him a cup of tea. When paakhi went missing or was harassed when kinjal had eloped and was harassed it was anupama who took the first steps towards course correctuon. She was not the abala nari.
All these should have been wake up calls to indicate that she can go against his expectations. Which some here call Mahanta... That is the way the makers are scripting her character
In his control freak mode Vanraj manipulates the other idiots to tow his line and execute his agenda.... However the actual patriarch who treats anupama as his daughter giving her an equal right in the property and permitting her to mortgage her share thwarts Vanrajs effort to clip Anupamas wings a n d keep her trapped.
She will soar, glide, hover swoop or even migrate if need arises is not envisaged by the 4 idiots blinded by patriarchy.
The two men and father figure are each shown to be so different . Anupama will assert herself even if goaded by others and not succumb to manipulations and I think that us what matters.
