It was convenient for some competitors to eliminate it. Rather than censoring or setting rules like, FB and Tw have for example. It is a mattter of $$ finances. Just like trying to ban Twitter from some countries, if you look hard enough you will find that the replacement proposed for India, has "investors" who are politicians or ministers or simply people who are in power to ban one company or another in their pocket. I is all $$ NOT modesty or decency or an effort to keep a country uncontaminated by filth...it is a power-information control money game.

Google did not pay enough attention to Orkut, maybe because Orkut was huge in India and Brazil, so it was inevitable. Google must be ruing it now.
