Thats the beauty or our misfortune. They are connected at much deeper level, only disconnected at wife-husband level. This relationship is one aspect of their entire bonding...I believe. They care, they trust(now), they respect, they admire and also love each other. But they think what is the purpose if they cant live together forever.
