Well, I did say you can choose which country to live in. You don't have to feel towards the one where you were born or where you moved with your parents.

Usually if another country were to invade the one you were living in and take over the government, the citizens of your country will never be considered equal to the invader country's citizens and you will be oppressed and exploited. The invading country will not take the interests of your country into account, which also means yours, and make laws to your detriment. Life is never good under an invader. But if you are in that zone where you think life is meaningless anyway, then I suppose that won't matter either. Existential nihilism, I believe, it is called.

LOL world is over the times of invading. You wont see invasion like that anymore. The wars esp the ones between India and Pakistan have no end goal and are used as pawn by the govts and media without caring about the innocent civilians on both sides of the border.

Whether you will suffer in an enemy attack depends on where you live and what you do. If you're a nobody in bublefuck nowhere, most likely your life will be the same irrespective of who is in power.

Because when another country or culture attacks or invades your country or culture, they just don't get the political power, they also hold the economical, social, cultural and lifestyle power. Just think about British colonising India or China conquering Tibet. It effected the common people, it effected everyone.

Sovereign country doesn't commit atrocities against its people, it is the government who does, and they can be changed, either by civil war, coup or election, but if another country invades you and conquers you, only way to get back the identity is to fight war and the only way it can be done if people are patriotic. Hence patriotism is important, because world is never going to consider every human as one.

I think we always seem to mistake government with country. They are not same.

Baghban. I found the movie over the top. The kids in the movies were assholes. But it's exaggerated and rare.

In the real world, many people face challenges looking after their elderly parents. Some people are already spread thin between their jobs and kids. Sometimes if the parents have dementia or other high needs conditions, it's safer to put them in a reputable home than risk them being alone all day. Elderly folks have fallen and broken bones, burnt themselves, or wandered off when they are alone.

Also, expecting other human beings to care for you is absurd. Children are not meant to be security investments for the future. You have kids because you want a family, not because you want someone to take care of you in old age. There can be so many things that can go wrong rendering your kids unable to care for you - they could be minimum wage employees working multiple jobs, they may live in tiny studio apartments because that's all they can afford, they could die or have a debilitating accident or get a disease like Cancer, MS, or ALS, they could have mental health issues or substance abuse issues, they could have special needs kids who take up a lot of time and attention, they could have jobs that keep them on the road, they could end up living in a country with many entry barriers.

Every human being should plan and make arrangements for their own care when they are old to the best of their ability. Instead of relying only on children build a community of family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, who help each other. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but it actually takes a village for humans to get through life. Cultivate a network so no one feels burdened and everyone can help you a little bit when you're in need.

The whole preachy guilt-tripping of children being indebted to parents is bullshit and irrational.

I logged on after a longggg time because this comment just sounds so tone deaf. How easy to say parents should save a nest egg for retirement and completely relinquishing any responsibility kids have toward taking care of their parents in old age.

It wasn't easy for parents to raise those kids - to give up careers, make sacrifices, work hard, go without things so those kids can have everything they want and give them the right education so they can stand on their feet. But how convenient to say....kids have no responsibility. Most indian parents give up on their savings to give education to their kids so they can have a better life - yet in return that child should do nothing. If society was made of so much utter selfishness, I would be very scared of it's future. This especially hits home for me because my parents have no retirement savings, they worked hard and saved nothing to give us education. Now me and my siblings bought them a house to live in - and I have no idea how I will continue to pay for it once I get married and move out, but I'm determined to figure out a way. If I'm not capable - I will make myself capable because this is the very very least I can do. Their sacrifices for me can't be measured in monetary value, but if it could be, this would be drop in the ocean.

Sorry not sorry for this rant. But I just can't with this blatant selfishness from today's young educated lot. Education should never make you tone deaf to parental care and love. Yes, not everybody is capable of taking care of their parents, yet it doesn't mean rest of the lot shouldn't even try.

That's not true. Ask Iraq or Syria or Afghanistan or Palestinians. The wars between India and Pakistan are also over the territory of Kashmir. We need an army for defence in any case. If we didn't have one, it's not like the people in India won't be affected if the Pakistanis decide to take over. That's what RTH was saying. Of course there is propaganda by the government and media, that's where you can choose to be rational and not get manipulated. But a nation needs to be defended in the current political world and one needs to have allegiance if they don't want to be a hypocrite. If you don't owe anything to your country, your country doesn't owe anything to you. Then why are you using it's political and infrastructural structure and going to courts for any injustice done to you? It's bizarre to me that you want to live inside a system but without doing your part for it.

Reading all those comments, even I was wondering why everybody is so one-sided. I understand that old age doesn't mean people cannot be independent. You don't have to be tied down to them, like some overly dramatic people think. But there are certain responsibilities that children should not avoid with respect to their parents. Family needs to be for each other whenever their help is needed.

You are right! Though if this is the mindset people have, indian parents should just be like western parents, have the kid be fully independent at 18, have them pay for their own college and living cost while saving up for their retirement and even make them work while going to high school to pay for those expensive tuitions on the side. Like you want nothing to do with them in old age, that's fine then, they will just prioritize themselves in your young age.

Exactly. That would be the complete argument. Maybe not many people would want that here lol
