Just because I am questioning the concept of country and patriotism doesn't mean everyone has to question it. Other people do love their country. People do want to serve their country in the armed forces. I don't think loving your nation or serving the nation is inherently wrong. I'll even acknowledge soldiers when they show courage and integrity. And just like I have the right to defend my home if an intruder breaks in, I do believe countries have a right to defend themselves.
What it means is that I hold countries and their armies accountable. I believe that human life will always be more valuable than borders or patriotism. If a country abuses its military might to oppress or control others then it must be held accountable. I feel that even citizens who love their country should hold their country accountable. Just because someone joins the army doesn't mean they are automatic heroes. People can be brave in other forms. Military engineers and doctors are also risking their lives for their country in different ways. War zone journalists are selflessly risking their lives for the higher purpose of truth. And we know that the history of the military is full of raping, pillaging, torture, and all sorts of atrocities - and being a member of the armed forces means extra scrutiny to ensure honorable conduct.
And as I said, I am questioning, I don't even know if this line of thought is right or even morally justified.
You were asking why should anybody hold allegiance to a country? So, the simple answer is to belong. That's the conventional answer right. You can choose which country to live in. But then you should be loyal to that country, which essentially means to not hurt its interests. And you can choose to not live in any country. But then I suppose that will put you in a very difficult position because you won't have any defence against any other nation. So, anyway once you decide where, then you should be loyal to that country. For me, it starts with myself as the smallest unit, then my family, then my nation, in a broad way of speaking. Because if you choose to disregard the borders that divide people, that just makes you ignorant of the reality of politics.
Of course an army is held accountable. That's why they have their own courts to try errant officers. It may not be a perfect system and should probably improve, but it's not like army officers are given immunity from all their actions. To be sure, I am not one of those to give excuses for the army in the face of loads of complaints about human rights abuse. I am sure there is truth to that. But in reply to your post, I wanted to ask if you have thought through this. An army is extremely important, in a practical sense, for a country and it's not easy for people to go into a profession knowing they will be facing fatal situations most of their days. I don't think it's the same for military engineers or doctors. They may have to face danger sometimes, but not like soldiers definitely. And for that, if people respect them more, I suppose it is valid. If they get motivated by the amount of respect they get, or they feel motivated to die for their country, I suppose that's how anybody would survive in a profession like that. There are people who get doubts about staying in a software desk job because of random reasons, don't you think they will be bogged down by pretty valid doubts in the army? They would want to leave. But the promise of national respect and giving their life for their country, noble thoughts, they probably make them stay there.
I mean it's like if a doctor decided to work in a remote area, rife with a deadly disease, wouldn't she be respected more than a doctor working in her clinic in a city? Not to say that a person who thinks only about herself is wrong or morally reproachable but someone who thinks about others surely is better than the rest of us? It's totally up to an individual how she wants to live her life but it's my personal opinion that somebody who thinks about more than herself is deserving of more appreciation and respect than the rest. And the same way, I feel about the army, doctors, teachers, the so called noble professions, because for me they really are noble.
