Yes, in many ways we are. Just because sexuality is more openly expressed people like to claim content is getting bolder but that's not what being progressive is about na? FLs are being held to higher and higher standards. Ever since Gul has entered the scene, there is almost this race of who can make the most abusive ML have a large fanbase.
Look at shows running on mainstream channels in the 2000s- where, these days, are channels like star one which were at least pushing the envelope for their time? Or the so called 'mahaan' FLs of early Ekta- for their entire gamut of flaws, at least they used to have a spine, and the female audience actually cheered them on moral victories rather than mock them for being virtuous (somehow, that's become a bad thing nowadays- you have to be 'grey' to be liked). Where are our light hearted but unproblematic comedy shows, like Khichdi or Sarabhai? Where are shows on GECs geared towards children and younger audiences, like Shararat or Sonpari (which were both Star Plus, I think) Where are the shows which colors used to be known for, which would at least try (with varying degrees of success) to deliver a social message?
Unfortunately, in the past decade, TV has become painfully homogeneous and more and more problematic by the year. And it's vicious, because audiences are getting desensitized to the issues in such content, and so unproblematic content is just rejected now- case in point, an ML valuing consent being labeled as Gopi Bahu, or wanting an FL to be assaulted to 'teach her a lesson' or as Siku said, a show being rejected because FL 'bechari' nahi hai.
