Also since you talk about Fateh's subtle inclinations towards Tejo even during his jasso jaap days, do you think it is possible that a tiny subconscious part knew that he actually loves Tejo, or at least has much deeper bonding and understanding with her but refrained because he considered her inaccessible because she's too perfect, and he isn't good enough for her? In his own words, "she's sachha moti", someone who has won over his father while none of them ever could, and knows that he doesn't have his own goals and dreams. As you discussed in your other comment, he just took his father's and jasso's dreams, they were never truly his own. So the contrast between them cemented his belief that Tejo couldn't be his partner.
His first meeting with her was upsetting to him who did not fangirl him.
His second meeting, they argued again.
And it went on.
Firstly he was intimidated by her. Tejo was definitely someone who cared Nothing for any criticism and she shone brighter and tougher.
When he found out about Jasso being in the Ball, he immediately refused to entertain the notion that Jasso wants to go to Canada. He says that may be she was attending it. He concludes that Jasso will be someone who will want to remain in Punjab and love the state; better the place and work for the people.
So that was a life partner he had envisioned. The woman he expected Jasmine to be.
Instead it became reverse. Tejo became that woman who had similar dreams to his Father that he had adopted as his own and Jasmine wanted Canada. He loved Jasmine and took over her dreams as his own.
Even while choosing the ring, he saw Tejo sacrifice her choice to support Jas's sentiments of having her wear the Family ring. Fateh immediately concludes that Jasso will be like this too.
So ultimately, he was deluding himself by plastering Tejo's qualities on Jasmine. His Delusions blew up spectacularly on his face.
Also, there was the matter of empathy that coloured their relationship. Tejo pitied Fateh because she knew her sister's obsession with Canada. She tried her hardest to dissuade him and he knew that she felt bad for him. This already put him in an inferior position to her.
Tejo's friendship to him was a lifeline. He kept hanging onto it and depended heavily on it. She saw him at his lowest; when he had no money of his own and she lent him hers. She had always been at a powerful position to him in comparison.
He could only become her friend when she felt weak. His trust on her Strength, his support made her regain herself and that actually made their friendship. Except for that moment, Tejo had never needed Fateh but Fateh had always needed Tejo.
Tejo thus became more and more important. And that's the truth isn't it? Tejo was always superior in his eyes, and he supposedly loved Jasmine. Which is why he began calling her his best friend; a relationship that Bound her to him without the added layer of his subtle inclination towards her. No wonder Nimmo was critical of their relationship. The comfort level they shared and his dependence on her plus his trust spoke volumes than his 'love' for Jasso.
