She came in and went straight to her room, not hearing the calls of the family members. He was right behind her and was calling out to her too but she ignored his calls.
To say she was hurt, was understated - she was broken and by who? The only two people that she cared for more than herself - her sister and her husband. Both were playing with her emotions, her feelings. None of them thought about her whilst playing their games in which she was stuck in the middle.
“Tejo, I’m sorry. I know I was wrong and shouldn’t have done that. But I loved her and I just couldn’t move on. It hurts to know that she tried moving on so fast,” Fateh said. She didn’t respond to him. Instead, she grabbed her suitcase and headed straight to the closet.
“What are you doing with the suitcase, and are you even listening to me?” he probed her hoping he’ll get a response this time.
“Tejo,” he said. Nothing, again. “Tejo! I’m talking to you. Why are you ignoring me?” He kept calling out to her and her, ignoring him.
“Yaar, I said I’m sorry, na. Why are you making a big issue out of it?” He said and she looked at him in disbelief.
“What did you just say? It’s no big deal and I’m making an issue. Hahah.” She scoffed at his (ugly) face. “You know what? You’re right. I’m making a big deal out of it by not involving our families into this. They have the right to know what the both of you have been doing behind all of our backs.”Tejo said.
“Tejo, listen,” Fateh said.
“No! You listen, Mr. Fateh Singh Virk. I refused to stand in between the two of you all the time. I refuse to sacrifice my dreams. I refuse to let the two of you play me like I’m some ping pong ball or a game to say the least. I’m human too, just like the two of you. Have you ever thought about how I will feel when I find out about your actions? I tried. I’ve always tried. It’s always me trying. Why can’t you do the same? Are you a child that I have to hold your hands and show you the way? I didn’t have to help you, you needed to make the effort.
“Also, you don’t need to worry about me. I’m not weak like you or Jasmine. I can fully pick myself up after you both pushed me down.” She said looking straight at him and that hurt like hell, he thought.
“I can’t do it without you,” he said to her.
“Well try, cause I’m leaving you. And before you say I can’t then let me tell you, I fully well can. And you cannot stop me.” Tejo retorted.
“I have a lawyer friend and she’ll help us with the divorce. You and I both know that we can’t be happy in this relationship. My sister will always be in the middle. She’ll be the reason why we can’t make this marriage work along with you. Don’t worry about the family, I’ll inform them and let them know it’s a mutual decision.”
“Tejo, please don’t do this. We’re best friends, right? Then why can’t we make this work. We will come up with a solution, please,” Fateh pleaded to her teary eyed.
“I have to do this. For my sanity and for yours. I can’t keep on living my life for others. This is beneficial for both of us and our families. And a divorce isn’t such a bad thing. We’ll be able to move on from this. It’s not as if there was love in this relationship. Forget about love, you had no trust in me. That’s why no matter how hard we try to move ahead with this, it will never work.”
He was left speechless because he knew every word she spoke was true. He didn’t trust her enough to share what was happening and he now began to realize his mistake but it was too late. She was leaving him. He wanted to stop but he couldn’t. He didn’t want to tie her down. He didn’t want her to sacrifice her dreams for him. He would be too selfish. He has been but it’s time to let her go. She deserves this.
“Goodbye, it is for now. We’ll meet soon once the divorce case begins. I wish you the best. Take care.” And with that she left him there standing whilst she headed out the room with her suitcase to meet the rest of the Virk family along with the Sandhus; as Abhiraaj has already been informed of the happenings. It’s time to let go. It’s her time. Tejo Sandhu’s time.
