Friends and music lovers,

Today (July 14) is Roshan Lal Nagrath's birthday, more popularly known as just Roshan. He's probably better known in these times as Hrithik Roshan's grandfather although I prefer to think of Hrithik as Roshan's grandson!

Roshan struggled early on in his career until he was given a break in Neki aur Badi by Kidar Sharma. The movie flopped but Kidar Sharma gave him another chance to prove himself with Baawre Nain (1950), which he did. And what songs the movie had! He utilized the singer, Rajkumari, who sadly faded away into oblivion, brilliantly as Geeta Bali's voice in the film, and I think Rajkumari suited her to a T. Listen to (and watch) this track; it's so cute!

Sun Bairi Balam sach bol re, ib kya hoga...

https://youtu.be/u5LJexNgklk

Baawre nain had some brilliant tracks - Teri duniya mein dil lagta nahi, Mujhe sach sach bata do, Mere roothe huye balma, Mohhabat ke maaron ka, and the beautiful Mukesh- Geeta Dutt duet - Khayalon mein kisike.

His Meera Bhajan for Naubahar - Ae ri main toh prem deewani in Raag Bhimpalas was a huge hit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-ZvWTz8SJU

He then also composed music for Malhaar (Ek baar agar tu keh de, and Bade armaanon se rakha hai) and Anhonee (Main dil hoon ek armaan bhara and Samake dil mein hamare), not making much of a mark until the 1960s and Barsaat Ki Raat.

No mention of Roshan is complete without this musical bonanza of a movie. His qawwalis - especially the stunning Na toh karvaan ki talash hai, are still talked about to this day. In fact, Roshan's forte is considered to be qawwalis. His 'Nigahein milane ko jee chahta hai' from Dil hi toh hai is another popular one.

Here's a beautiful song from Barsaat Ki Raat - Maine shayad tumhe pehle bhi kahin dekha hai

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_pilWUMOFI

Then came a spate of hits - Dil hi toh hai, Aarti, Tajmahal, Mamta, Chitralekha, Bahu Begum and Anokhi Raat.

He was responsible for introducing the lyricists Anand Bakshi and Indeevar who later went on to have fulfilling careers. Anand Bakshi and he collaborated on Devar which was a huge musical hit.

He passed on very early, he was only 50.

Roshan was also an accomplished esraj and harmonium player. It makes me sad he's all but forgotten, and I think he was very under-rated even among his peers.

Let's celebrate this accomplished artiste today.

What are your favorite Roshan songs?

I simply have to post these two songs from Bawre Nain - though I love most of them but these two (in addition to Sun Bairi Balam) are simply adorable to watch because of the chemistry between RK and Geeta Bali - pity they never did any more movies together!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI-uni8n1uU

I love the last stanza:

Tujhe kisne kaha hai mere sapnon mein aane ko?

Tere sapnon mein aate hain teri kismat jagane ko! 😆 (you go, girl!)

And this one

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLWbUTyXjdY

Geeta Bali is soooo cute - the way she pats the space around her and says - hamare paas toh aavo! I so love Rajkumari's voice, it totally fits Geeta and her persona!

And RK is such a 'sadu' in this! 😆

Thanks, Riya, for reminding us abt Roshan's fantastic musical journey.

I love all his compositions especially qawwalis, sum fav songs are:

https://youtu.be/BDAyzXC-ayE?t=48

this song has two versions. Lata's solo & another version is sung by Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur.

https://youtu.be/UIeHphjtLR4

And it was one of the last compositions of Roshan. And what remarkable songs he composed in this movie !

na denge hum tujhe ilzaam bewafaai kaa
magar gilaa to karenge teri judaai kaa
tere khilaaf shikaayat ho
tere khilaaf shikaayat ho, aur tu aaye
Khudaa kare ke qayaamat ho, aur tu aaye
hum intezaar karenge

ye zindagi ter kadmon mein daal jaayenge
tujhi ko teri amaanat sambhaal jaayenge
hamaaraa aalam-e-rukhsat ho
hamaaraa aalam-e-rukhsat ho, aur tu aaye
Khudaa kare ke qayaamat ho, aur tu aaye
hum intezaar karenge

“Jo waada kiya wo nibhaana padega” is such a simple lyric, but it has now become an out-and-out iconic song. Roshan was mindbogglingly prolific in churning out one memorable song after another in those days, and 1963 was an especially productive year for him.

Hi Mousy! Thanks for posting these songs. You know, I only recently 'discovered' the Rafi- Suman K version of 'Rahen na rahein hum', having never seen 'Mamta', and I found I quite liked it!

And Taj Mahal has some wonderful songs. This one here is my favorite, Sahir's lyrics shine!

You know, I think Roshan hit it out of the park several times - with Barsaat ki Raat first, then Dil hi to hai and Taj Mahal and then, of course, with Chitralekha. What songs this movie has!

Here's another one that hasn't been already posted. This is in Raag Kalavati sung by Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNkdjWrAIKo

Mann re tu kahe na dheer dhare from Chitralekha was voted as the best Hindi song of all time in an Outlook magazine poll that had several esteemed musicians and composers in the jury, including stalwarts such as Manna Dey, Mahindra Kapoor, Gulzar and Khayyam. This speaks volumes of the genius of Roshan, Sahir and Rafi - the artistes that created this wonderful song!

Here's a link to a forum post on the article (The original article has been made a paid one)

Outlook Poll

I would always confuse Madan Mohan and Roshan early on although their musical styles were different. Perhaps it's because my dad owned a cassette tape of Malhar with Aashiana on the B side! 😆 Besides, with Roshan doing music for Taj Mahal and Madan Mohan for Jahan Ara, both based on the Mughal dynasty, I guess the overlap becomes stronger.

Also they both had their respective fortes: Madan Mohan was undoubtedly the king of ghazals and Roshan of course was the king of qawwalis.

What a coincidence then that Roshan's birthday should also mark the death anniversary of Madan Mohan!

Another beautiful Roshan song, lyrics by Satyendra Athaiyya, so wonderfully sung by Talat! ❤️

What lovely poetry!

Khud maine husn ke haathon mein

Shokhi ka chalakta jaam diya

gaalon ko gulabon ka rutba

kaliyon ko labhon ka naam diya

Aankhon ko diya saagar gehra

Tu aake mujhe pehchaan zara

Main dil hoon ek armaan bhara....

Satyendra wasn't a well-known lyricist, but like Javed Akhtar said in his show, even if he had just written this one song, it would be enough.

And the tune by Roshan is just so ethereal, so soft and delicate, like a fragile flower!

And yes I agree, Rafi brings that special something to DK on screen. But I also love Talat’s voice for him. He’s sung some incredible songs for DK.

So true, he sounds equally perfect for a Dilip Kumar, Johnny Walker, Shammi Kapoor or Guru Dutt.

Johnny Walker and Rafi was another hit combination. I think there was a time when a humorous song picturized on JW and sung by Rafi was a mandate. Here is one such gem from Chori Chori.

Totally agree on Talat. His delicate voice perfectly suited to DK's acting.

20 July is Rajendra Kumar Tuli's birthday, more popularly known as 'Jubilee Kumar' because of his long-running, successful films.

He began his career with a cameo in Patanga (1949), followed by a small role in Jogan (1950). His first big break happened with Vachan (1955) for which he was paid a meagre 1500 rupees! The film was a hit and was followed by more successful films - Mother India where he starred opposite his would-be samdhi and samdhan - Sunil Dutt and Nargis! He also starred in Goonj uthi Shehnai opposite Ameeta, which had some beautiful songs by Vasant Desai.

He rose to stardom in the 1960s with a spate of successful films that were called Jubilees if they ran over 25 weeks, and hence his title of 'Jubilee Kumar'!

Dhool ka phool, Gharana, Dil ek Mandir, Aarzoo, Aayee milan ki Bela, Mere Mehboob, Suraj, Sangam, Jhuk gaya aasmaan - were some of them.

He was extremely close to Sunil Dutt who he stood by when Sanjay Dutt was arrested. He was also close to Raj Kapoor with his son, Kumar Gaurav being engaged to the latter's daughter Reema. But after Kumar broke the engagement and married Namrata Dutt, their friendship is said to have soured. He played sympathetic characters in RK's Sangam and Mera Naam Joker.

Rajendra Kumar has had some beautiful songs picturized on him throughout his illustrious career. Here are my top favorites.

When I think of Rajendra Kumar this is the first song that pops in my head. So beautifully sung by Rafi, composed by Naushad and written by Shakeel Badayuni.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJ3DwFWhQuE

Rafi has sung some of his best songs for Rajendra Kumar. Here's another heart-wrenching one with music by Shankar-Jaikishen, lyrics by Shailendra. This movie was a misery-fest though, and I hated Raaj Kumar in it! 😡

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBCuQj69L08

Another one of my favourites is this one from Aarzoo. Although I love 'Aji humse bachkar' as well, this one is special because of the way Rafi sings it with a lilt in his voice. And Nasir Hussain's expressions are a hoot!

Iss dil mein abhi aur bhi zakhmon ki jagah hai

Ab rookhi katari ko do aab aur zyaada!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qs5d8NGO6no

Please do post your favourite Rajendra Kumar songs to celebrate this successful and accomplished actor on his birthday!
