Such a great post. I've also been thinking of why I don't like Sunny yet he has the same qualities Raghav does.
They're both rude.
They're highly batameez and insensitive.
Raghav was also a dark character in the beginning, his views on women were punishable! He was also extremely rude to his staff. They definitely toned it down and you do feel it after a few episodes. I guess, the channel demanded it, or the writers understood that if they stretch this character for too long, they may reach a point of no return with the audience. They also understood that we will no longer buy all the toxicity that was quite the norm on TV a few years ago. It's a welcome change and I'm glad they did it because I would have found it hard to like Raghav if they continue. I must clarify that I loved Raghav the moment I set my eyes on him, but I did not watch from the first episode. My first was the one where he is hurt and Pallavi is dressing him, as well as the scene of Marathi - Telugu conversation they have when Pallavi comes to return his money. I watched both these scenes in a span of a few minutes, and after that I decided to watch the show because I just loved Raghav's eyes
Not wanting to digress, I did find his initial behavior abominable, to say the least. Particularly, the highway scene repulsed me so much, I almost felt like "they better correct this". It was toxic behavior at its worst and I am not the kind to adore the fact that he saves her after putting her through hell. Other than that, his views on women did come across as harsh but I was ready to give this a chance because I believed he had a backstory. By now, we know that all that has been watered down.
Coming to sunny, what I feel is that we're viewing sunny as an outsider. Raghav is the hero, so it's all okay but Sunny, nope. There's definitely a certain bias in everyone who loves Raghav, including myself.
However, what I don't like about Sunny is that he is faking his love. He is not sincerely and he is not loyal. Raghav is none of this. He is sincere, he never fakes love and when it comes to loyalty, we know how much he values it. Raghav has a rough exterior, he shouts at his staff but he also takes care of their needs (yes, this may have been a later addition, but a welcome one as it added to the character graph). He has principles, and he follows his code of conduct, if not the one dictated by society. Pallavi could not defend Raghav today because she knows Sunny is right. And that was something I too loved to watch.
Coming to Sunny, he seems to have no moral compass. He is like a broken kite, he moves in any direction the wind takes him, at least so far, that is what we've been shown. There is no mention of his principles and what he values. He has repeatedly told Kirti that he can find many girls like her, in short, he is not loyal and he does not love her, at all. He is not sincere and utterly rude. He is also quite irresponsible and shows no emotional depth, something that Raghav possesses deeply. When it comes to misogynic personality, he is the epitome of it. Seems like he learnt it from his father. He thinks of lowly of women in all fields of life, just not love. If the makers did not water down Raghav's misogynic views, would he have been any different? I believe, yes. Because Raghav held a particular opinion about women he knew were after his money and fame and those who faked love. He did not hold this opinion of all women, but the few that he came across in life. Again, I can't be sure because this characteristic was dropped very quickly, and I'm glad for it. Sunny has a sorry opinion of the entire gender. At least that's how I see it.
In conclusion, Raghav and Sunny are two sides of a coin but one has principles and the other one seems to be hanging from the ceiling like a lost bat.
@bold- Exactly. It's been on my mind ever since the comparisons first started, both in the show and in all our discussions. Because on the surface, it does make sense, because they share so many traits. But at the same time, I wasn't able to convince myself that they're comparable characters, so I really wanted to delve into why that might be.
Early Raghav was hard to watch for me. I wrote it somewhere in this thread only, but he was basically swag on point, totally terrible personality. They tried to balance it out early on itself, by bringing up the traumatic past and the whole 'he has a weakness for kids' angle to humanize him, but he was so dark, these efforts didn't cut it, and he almost did reach irredeemable levels with the audience, which is why they had to course correct, thankfully. I actually did watch from episode 1, and was often just too grossed out by his behaviour, and thankful beyond belief when they corrected it. Had they not, either I would not have been able to love Raghav like I do now, or I would have just felt disgust at myself for rooting for such a man. I hope you're right about audiences getting more sensible, because even just this year, I've seen MLs that I've wanted to personally strap down in an electric chair be heavily celebrated, and I'm so glad our guy isn't like that, and they reeled him in before he could get there, and they acted fast enough that those traits don't feel significant.
There were actually two scenes on the highway that gave me the 'correct this, now!!' feel. The truck scene, of course, there's really no room for debate there in my view. No matter what spin you put on it, it was unforgivable. I don't care how angry and hurt and disappointed and whatever the hell else he was going through, he crossed a big line. But I was also very disturbed by the pole scene, where he used her pallu to wipe her sweat. It was a super well executed scene, excellent chemistry, but it left me distraught beyond words, if I'm honest. I wish he'd just slapped her back in the market itself, and I'm sure that would have been less scary- late night, lonely road, petite woman being backed into a corner by an angry, aggressive, and physically intimidating man who if fiddling with her clothes? Yikes. It's so many girls; worst nightmare, and exactly the situation we try consciously to avoid every time we leave the house. As viewers, we could enjoy the aesthetics of the sequence, since we knew Raghav won't cross a certain line, but putting myself in Pallavi's shoes leaves me completely shaken.
I agree on being an outsider to Sunny's life, and I tried really hard to control for bias while writing this, and I came to several of the same conclusions as you. Even giving him the benefit of doubt, he's clearly duplicitous even with people who he claims to love, which is one thing we've not seen with Raghav. As ruthless and atrocious as he may be with his enemies, which once included Pallavi, when it comes to those who he considers his own, he's solid as a rock in being there for them. Sunny's behaviour with his girlfriend is parallel to Raghav's behaviour with his enemy. That can't be acceptable.
Plus, apni baat ka bilkul bhi pakka nahi hai. First, he doesn't want to get married. Now, he can't wait. He'll threaten to commit suicide to manipulate Kirti, then tell her he can find many other girls, then be offended that she said she can move on. I just don't understand his deal. He has nothing intrinsic driving him apart from his own ego and the need to win. Right now, he sees Raghav and Pallavi as a challenge I think- Raghav, because he'll feel a thrill in pulling one over such a powerful, influential man, and Pallavi, because how dare a woman talk back to him, he wants to 'show her her place'.
Kirti is not someone he gives two shits about, she's his key to these victories that will win him this game. On a separate thread, I said how Raghav's that powerful king jiski jaan tote mein basti thi, and Jaya and Kirti are the totas in his case, his Achilles Heel. Sulochana leveraged this in the past, which lead to hell breaking loose then, and Pallavi became collateral damage, and Sunny's leveraging it now, and I suspect Pallavi's about to get stuck in the crossfire again, especially with all the explicit threats he's been tossing her way.
"In conclusion, Raghav and Sunny are two sides of a coin but one has principles and the other one seems to be hanging from the ceiling like a lost bat."
Couldn't have put this better!
