The Shaan Aastha library conversation is the root of all misconceptions regarding Aastha character. It was very badly handled. I say this as a viewer of the OG. It seems they plainly wrote it down without giving much thoughts to the character.
If Aastha was so aloof she would have never wanted to talk to Shaurya or come back to his life. She would have moved on with her life like her past was a closed chapter. But it was not. She had Shaurya's pictures in her home. She wrote in her diary about him saying she was waiting for the day when her son would understand her sacrifice.
As per the one fb scene, Aastha tried to reason with Tej but he was adamant. She asked Shaan to make him understand who only asked Tej to find a solution. He didn't ask Tej to let Aastha work. It seemed like Tej would decide her parents' fate. When Aastha said that her parents meant something for Shaan too then he asked her to understand that the traditions being followed since ages cannot be changed. She then asked him if he supported her, he didn't answer. Aastha was cornered. She had no support in that house. She had no option but to leave so she decided to take Shaurya along. But Tej said they can't let Shaurya struggle with her in a difficult life. He apparently threatened her with court case. Aastha while leaving said she would fight till the end for her son. Then we don't know what happened to make her back out.
During library conversation Shaan said he would have found a solution but she was in a hurry to leave. This made her look like a selfish irresponsible stubborn woman. But perhaps Aastha had no faith in Shaan that he would be able to find a solution that would be agreeable to her. Her saying children grow up fine without mothers was perhaps her justification for choosing her parents over Shaurya. Though it didn't suit the character here. If she thought that way she should have kept away from him and never expect to be back in his life. This was a line directly copied from the OG but that Aastha never wanted to come back. She in fact asked her son to assume that she was dead.
Aastha's character is quite inconsistent. It seems they were trying to experiment with her. Perhaps they never intended to show her in a negative light but her treatment of Shaurya antagonized viewers so in the Birthday track they made her look a sacrificial helpless woman.
IMO it would have been best if they showed that she fought a custody battle and lost because of the power of Sabharwals or withdrew when she found it was causing lot of trauma to Shaurya.
