Which movie was trying to say cigarette, gaalis and multiple partners is the new age girl? I like how you mentioned Piku. So her drinking is acceptable modern behavior but showing women smoking is bad? Piku was sexually active and I doubt her current partner was her first or her last boyfriend so she also had multiple partners.

I agree with you that women character need more depth. Bollywood in general doesn't know how to write a lot of those and they especially don't know how to write women.

😆 Not familiar with small town girls but I assume these girls are as similar to real life small town girls as SRK's Rahul and Raj are to our romantic partners. Neither Bitti not Tanu were supposed to be your typical modern (hate that word) girls and the movies make it clear. Bitti's character arc was she didn't fit in because she was different and Tanu's arc was that woman is a little 🤪

Bollywood men are so often shown smoking, drinking casually, having sex with girlfriends. No one questions it. No one wonders why that was shown and what is Bollywood trying to say about the entire male species in 2021. There are never articles about it or posts about it. But a female character is shown doing similar things and WOW! What a shame, how she is not a good girl anymore and it's a disgrace Bollywood is trying to say this is what new age women are like.

I don’t have any problem with Bollywood depicting girls like that. Everyone has the right to live their life as they wish to and it’s completely fine until and unless they are harming anyone.

My point is in movies the guys easily fall for such girls because may be they find her unique or honest or straight forward, but in real life I don’t think most of the Indian men will agree to marry a girl like that. They might date such girls but never marry.

Of course, there could be exceptions.

Sorry, I don't agree. For me, a "modern" Indian girl is someone who is the decision-maker in her life, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, she has morals, integrity, character and depth.

A few good examples of modern female characters (old & new), who were less like fictional caricatures and more like real people.

Geeta from Seeta Aur Geeta
(She could kick ass, but had morals too. Certainly a character way... way... ahead of her time)
Stream Seeta Aur Geeta Online | 1972 Movie | Yidio

Manju from Khoobsurat
(Modern, but not presented as a "bigdail ladki". She had values👏At times, Manju felt like a time-displaced 21st century girl in a 1980 BW film.)

Milli from Rangeela
(It weren't just her clothes that were modern. Milli worked hard and fulfilled her dreams, but still kept her feet on the ground. 👏 Urmila at her best here.)

Nisha from Dil To Pagal Hai (My most favt. character of all timesmiley9.After finding out that Rahul doesn't love her, she didn't return to ruin his life😆, like vamps from Ekta's serials. )

Vidya from Paa
(Very underrated character and film.)

Datto from Tanu Weds Manu (You don't need to look a certain way to be modern. Her personality said it all.)

Neerja from Neerja
(Needs no introduction. The fact that Neerja is a real-life story, makes it even from special.)

A fantastic list. And Rekha from Khoobsurat was a great example of this

Smoking, drinking and dating is not a strange concept for small town girls.😆

Most of them do it and it's not considered a big deal either.😆

If that makes them a "bad girl", then nobody is a good girl here.

Good guys could fall for any girl with full make-up on though because they don't get any attention most of the time.

Would they accept a girl who smokes, drinks and casually talks about her past relationships in an arranged marriage?

This depends on the guy. Most of the time girls don't let anybody know about these things apart from their friends. So chances are she would not even let the guy know about her habits or sex life.

A guy who is moderately open-minded would probably accept a girl who has smoking and drinking habits, because these things have became very common, and he knows that he ain't getting a Barjatya bahu.

If that girl also talks about her sex life openly then this would be a problem. Because even if he thinks there's nothing wrong with girls engaging in casual sex, if his own sex life is not that good compared to her, then that would hurt his male ego.

Even if the guy is okay with accepting a girl who is not a virgin, he would get bothered if she talks about it openly. He would want her to act like a virgin even if she's not so that her masculinity stays intact.

Although above all these things, the first preference of guys would still be how beautiful the girl is.

They would find a girl who drinks, smokes, abuses and gets in multiple relationships appealing just because she's beautiful. But if she's not beautiful and still engages in all of those above things, then she would not appeal to them.

So looks matter first and foremost, whether you are a "modern girl" or "traditional girl".
