Because women were objectified in (almost all ) films until recently and ogling a married woman on screen may not have be an exciting idea for the repressed male audiences until Savita Bhabhi showed up and introduced them to a new line of thinking. Commerical success usually came from naach gana films and they were all made by men, for men. Actresses were mostly used as eye candy /m#sturb#tion material . There were no lead roles for women above 35. When you were too old to run around trees or thrust provocatively at the camera you were shunned and a younger woman, young enough to be the male stars' daughter was chosen instead. I'm glad that women oriented roles for actresses above that threshold are being written these days. Without it being called 'parallel cinema'.

Kangana's video with AIB pretty much sums it up

Another reason could be the insecurity of the outwardly progressive husbands . " I don't like it when you are being hugged and touched by other guys even if it's on camera " .

Let's face it..it's hard to sell author backed stories about women above a certain age because our society can't stand the fact that women live interesting entertaining lives after college. Even in the case of films about younger women..take Chal De India for example; if they hadn't cast SRK as the coach it wouldn't have seen daylight.

Aishwarya, not getting any good no roles, has more to do with lack of her acting talent and box office reach than being a mother or married.

Yes, after a certain age it is difficult for actresses to get a lot of good roles but it is not impossible e.g Kareena, Rani, Vidya, etc...

Another aspect may also be the husband or in laws you marry into and how progressive they are. I'm sure a lot people in the older generation may not be ok with their daughter in laws continuing to work in movies, dancing, romancing. I mean if certain people in society have regressive views about married women, producers may have regressive views about married women, it's not unbelievable that the households these actresses marry into have similar views. It's ok to be a man in your 50s singing, dancing romancing 20 year olds, but hell no to our actresses doing the same.

I think one aspect that goes in favor of Kareena that often gets missed IS that Saif's family is super liberal, his mother and sister are both in the same profession and actors. So she never has had to deal with any pressure or judgement and basically continued working without a second thought.

Women who have their career and family together are amazing in my opinion. Vidya too is still working after marriage and is very passionate about her career. But if you enjoy being a housewife than lucky you or them actresses to have money to do that.

Ki and Ka, Veere Di Wedding was on her own. Unless sonam and Arjun Kapoor are more credible LOL!

Kajol didn’t stop after her wedding and she got married just as she reached No 1 (very unusual move) and was moving towards possible super stardom.

Even Madhuri Dixit Nene continued, I think she would’ve worked more had she not moved to the US... But in her case her career was waning...

I actually think Arjun is decent, I liked him in ki ka and also movie with Ileana athiya both movies was a hit but of course Kareena is bigger star than him. Veere di wedding was great because of all four women, Sonam had back to back hits before veere so she deserves equal credit as Kareena for this movie

Mostly actresses take a break after having kids.

But why don't male actors take a break when they have kids to take care of their children, to be with them,....??

Fathers also have a role in their children's lives,...right...? then they should also take a break to take care of their kids, spend time with them if according to people the acting industry is so busy and time consuming.

Bold - Yes they should but until men biologically carry, deliver and breastfeed a child ( maybe medical science is getting there) that cannot be enforced

Or it can be... Won’t be surprised if in the near future there’s a law in America that says fathers should stay home the exact same amount of time as the mothers do for the baby

In America women get 3 months off after having baby while in some countries like Holland woman can stay at home for 2 years with doctors visiting at home while still being at her job. I was surprised to see fathers taking off leave after baby born in America, if they are helping out by getting up early in the morning changing diapers and stuff good but otherwise they should not be taken off. Someone has to earn money in the family and it has be men. Women in Bollywood have the luxury of nanny so them getting back to work is good to be independent and they work only few days of the year. Once again Kareena is one actress from current generation who is doing that, older generation actresses did it. Normal working woman, I saw one nurse practitioner who has a stay home husband and I think it’s unfair for women since they cook, breastfeeding and etc. they get no sleep at night. If someone is going to be staying at home, it should be the mom.
