No if the actor is good they can play any character convincingly
The thing about mainstream Bollywood actors is that even if they play poor characters in movies, they still can't leave their superstar or large than life persona behind.
Some just can't do it because of their limitations. Others think it's necessary to attract the audience so they play a glossy version of people raised in poverty. Compared to actors in Crime Patrol, who are more realistic in their portrayal of poor people, as their acts aren't gimmicky.
Well the whole point of being a good actor is to be able to play any role convincingly regardless of whether it's similar to your life or not. If your intellect is sharp enough to grasp the reality of the character ,if you can empathise with him or her and the slip into their shoes, if you are hardworking enough to do all that's necessary to understand the mileu ,the backstory, the quirks etc why not .nothing should stop you.
Also there are different kinds of 'poor'. Usually the roles of poor people in films are stereotypical. Those are actually easier to play the the other roles of poor people who could be in a grey area of poverty.
a good director writer can always help them to get the act right. otherwise it may not be easy.
