Music composers and singers themselves as well as lyricists are MADE to produce and perform COMMERCIAL content by the film's producer(s).

Let's take Ra.One for example. The producers of the film insisted to somehow utilise Akon into the soundtrack. SRK has been dying to "crossover" into the worldwide audience market for many years now and this was one way to capture their attention. The song was much more about that, than Vishal-Shekhar's creativity/musicality prowess.

On the same soundtrack we have the brilliant "Bhare Naina" which went by unnoticed largely, but it's such an incredible track. The use of the background voices with the haunting choir effect incorporates the sci-fi element of the film as well as portray the deep emotion of losing a loved one (side note: Kareena Kapoor performed amazing in the song too)!!!

In my view, songs like Nashe Si Chadh Gayi and Ghungroo are OUTSTANDING songs. The production on those tracks is the best I've ever heard, and I listen to a LOT of music*. So, I'd say Vishal-Shekhar are more than competent when it comes to music, innovation, creativity and making bangers.

You'll have to watch episodes of Indian Idol to know the 'situation'. Basically the judges (Vishal included) overhype some contestants and the true worthy ones don't even get footage...Vishal did the most bizarre thing by going on stage and touching one contestant's feet...why would an A Lister composer do this? For money 😳

There is a huge difference between what u said @bold and what I mean. Even though mds and lyricists are made to make commercial content, their focus is solely music...like its in their DNA or something...they don't care about anything as long as there is no compromising the quality of the song. So even though these artists need to make commercial songs, they do so while being artistic. Dunno if I make any sense to u right now though.

Vishal-Shekhar's albums have never really touched me barring a few songs. That doesn't mean they haven't made good songs, they have, just doesn't tug at my heartstrings. For example lets take Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Pyareji even did one song of OSO for them...no matter how many times I hear Ye Dil Tum Bin Lagta Nahi (Izzat) or Jhilmil Sitaro Ka Aangan (Jeevan Mrityu) or Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai (Shor), I cry. If I am in a public place I control my tears. Similarly when I listen to Sandese Aate Hai by Anu Malik I have the same reaction. In recent times I felt the same emotion for Abhi Mujhmein Kahin by Ajay-Atul or Main Rahoon Ya Naa Rahoon by Amal Malik.

The Ra.One example u gave, agreed that they did a better crossover job than ARR. Chammak Challo was superior to Jai Ho. But then again, I feel there was something missing.

They did a great job at the SOTY too, the piano theme that plays when Abhimanyu realises he loves Shanaya at Rohan's bro's wedding was great. Bachna Ae Haseeno was quite wholesome there's that. But I did not like Nashe Si and Ghungroo...maybe because of the singers. I preferred Jai Jai Shiv Shankar and the dance theme from Befikre. Again, my opinion.

All in all, I preferred their older albums (until 2010 or so), the newer seem to be lacking.

And I too listen to ALOT of music, just not on LAST FM. 😊
