I have been rewatching the initial episodes lately and this is my understanding...atleast from what the awesome actor like Neil is trying to convey with his expressions and Virat's character arc.
1. Virat falls for Pakhi's beauty/personality instantly (we call it infatuation). There was never any oppurtunity for him to understand the person he was with. Sometimes I wonder if he had spent time with her and known her better, would he ever want to spend his life with her? Because she appears to be diagonally opposite to his value system!
2. While Pakhi's "Image" was in his mind, elsewhere he was deeply involved with Kamal Joshi and his daughter. He knows them in and out and feels connected with that family, again due to shared value system. This is also the reason he feels so protective about Sai from the beginning. He already has that deep connection with them. You can say at this point, he is actually two timing :)
Mind has Pakhi, but heart is at GC with Sai.
3. One more person he shares simlar emotional bond is Samrat. From initial episodes we see that Virat and Samrat share a very strong bond. One cannot hurt the other knowingly or unknowingly. And here come Pakhi for whom Samrat fell deeply (may be for looks again) which Virat gauged from their phone discussions.
4. So when the obvious 'Dharma sankat' came before him, he had two options 1. To stop the marriage and marry Pakhi. 2. To convince her into the marriage. In my opinion he chose option 2. because he thought it might be easy for Pakhi to forget 2 days infatuation( or love) and move on with a great person like Samrat. He would have never gone with choice 1 because, he already knows his brother is in love with his fiance. (point 3 above). Knowing Virat, he would not be comfortable marrying a girl whom his brother also loves and live in the same house (it is hard!).
5. But it turned out that convincing pakhi into marriage was not that easy and in a vulnerable moment he had to give her the Bhishma Vaada. :P I still think Virat just diffused the situation here. He did not make false promise, may be it was genuine at that moment because he had several things on his mind, one being to get this marriage happen for his brother's sake. He was acting more for his brother than Pakhi. What he did not expect is that he would marry someone like Sai who he is already connected to him emotionally. Love is just a feeling, it will come by anytime. They both already shared a deeper understanding (Sai knows him better at this point than Pakhi!) which is the foundation for any long term relationship. With the shared value system and bond, marriage between them just triggered the avalanche of love which is bound to happen.
So from my above understanding, Virat never had any deeper feelings for Pakhi that are stopping him from loving Sai. Yes only thing he has for Pakhi is protectiveness and guilt from the 'false' (now he knows it was not sincere) vaada he made. He is still sure that once Samrat comes, she will get a true companionship and love. He doesn't want her to move out of her marriage without giving Samrat a chance. He is buying time by not being harsh on her, being there for her when needed like any responsible person would do. I am sure he is also aware of her possessiveness towards him, but he cant act on her behalf. He is trying to make her see his stand whenever possible but in a subtler ways so not to hurt her. Only a kind hearted person can be so considerate. It is definitely causing his relationship to suffer a bit but he is forging a stronger bond with Sai in other ways so any MUs that are caused due his behavior with Pakhi will eventually be cleared.
And... when he decided to marry Sai, it is again his moral compass that made him say things to Sai about his commitment towards someone else. He is trying hard to abide by the oath he made few days ago and it is still fresh. Virat through his actions from the day of his marriage never thought of it as a deal. He accepted the marriage fully. There is not a single instance he pondered on the deal after that moment. It is a sealed life long deal for him from the beginning. He is matured enough to understand that marriages are made for long term! :D He would break it only if Sai wants to. He did not give her a choice during marriage because of cirucumstances but he loves and respects her to make a choice when she is ready and capable.
PS: I feel bad for Pakhi because, under the garb of maturity she is the most immature one. She is not able to gauge anyone's intentions. She would have fallen in love with Virat, not denying but she failed to understand the man she 'truly' loved.. that he has a strong moral compass that could not be meddled with. :)
Finally found some time to be active on the forum.
