I liked Phata Poster better than Kabir Singh. The former is such an adorable farce and the dialogues were very tongue-in-cheek. The Salman Khan cameo with Shahid as a cop is one of my favorite scenes. One of Salman's later films where he actually bothered to act. The 'Aila' and Andaz Apna Apna 2 reunion with Aamir reference was the cherry on top.

He resurrected himself really well but I think a major portion of that credit goes to Haider. That movie was SO good, so well made and it probably has to do with the entire crew of talented artists like Tabu, Irfan, etc. adding their own magic to the movie, but it came together perfectly and overnight, Shahid was back. What a performance!

Kabir Singh was an entertaining movie, problematic bits and all. While I don't know how well it did in India and how much of an impression it left on people, having watched the movie myself, I do think that helped further re-establish himself as a bankable actor not just as someone who can pack a powerhouse performance but also commercially... and I'll also add that it helped him reclaim his lost female fan following.😆

From nearly on his way out, he's now back to being an all-rounder and it took him a fight and a half to get there.

Kabir Singh was controversial but it ran very well at the box office and was a blockbuster (276 cr). It's by far his biggest hit as a lead. Yes, there was Padmivatt but he was a third wheel. Other than those two films according to BOI (questionable) , JWM is his only other hit. Haider though acclaimed is listed as "Average" as is UP.

KS has now given him the launching pad to be a bankable actor. Let's see how Jersey (another remake) does.

I didn't mean to be dismissive about Phata Poster in particular. After JWM and perhaps Kaminey, Shahid was stuck in this slump with a series of average to under average and silly movies that lasted for years. I've always rooted for him and was waiting and waiting for that one movie that would really put him back on the map when he came up with Phata Poster Nikla Hero ... 😆 just didn't make me wanna do the happy dance.

I kept confusing it with R Rajkumar too ... both came around the same time and looked very similar with Shahid doing the Agal bagal dance, Gandi baat and whatnot. I didn't watch either cuz they looked like mindless masala movies with silly humor and I just don't have the appetite for that kind of entertainment.

Personal likes aside, I have no doubts that he must have performed well in those movies but I don't think they did much to pick up the downward trend in his career graph that was so visible at the time. Just when I was starting to give up, he made a comeback with Haider and I think Kabir Singh ultimately helped him reclaim that star power he had lost somewhere along the way.

I wish movies like Haider got more recognition than they usually do ...I don't know what they're called -- parallel cinema? Thankfully there is a thing called "critically acclaimed" even though that also comes with its own share of biases and lobbying. I wish mass appeal didn't come with trade-offs like compromising quality, dumbing things down and over dramatization. Will be on the lookout for Jersey... but let's hope it doesn't continue the trend of toxic masculinity that every single actor seems to be perpetuating.đŸ˜” Kabir Singh might have done well but we don't want another one.

R Rajkumar was Shahid's biggest grosser before Kabir Singh/Padmavat happened. And is one of his most popular movies among the audience especially the single screen audience, its songs are still popular. So Rajkumar was never a problem, problem was him not doing enough massy movies after Rajkumar, until Kabir Singh.

He looked fishy, not dishy. And the only thing that looked like was decaying was that beard. 😳Looked like it hadnt been washed in a good while.đŸ€”

He has done better roles than this nikamme Kabir Singh. Kameenay and Haider were better.

Even Rajkumar I enjoyed thoroughly. His acting chops were displayed better.

Btw where is the commercially viable Shahid sahaab now? Has he got anything new in his kitty?

I didn't know that R Rajkumar was such a big deal. Well, I can go along with that.

i remember all of us and how we would mock him when he had those rangoon days..how he never had a 100cr grosser despite 15 years in industry..how padmavat's numbers all were credited to SLB, deep and veer but him and this one came and rest became history

and you write so well, minty! It is always a pleasure to read your posts because they are so well written..

I know you didn't mean to be dismissive. But R.. Rajkumar is a mindless Prabhudeva masala flick with no subtlety whatsoever. Phata Poster is more self-aware. The jokes are very tongue-in-cheek and they cheerfully exploit all the familiar Bollwood tropes of the 70s -widowed mother who raises her son singlehandedly, the lazy hero who wants to come to Mumbai to be a star, reunion at the end with father etc. It's sort of like a homage to 70s like in Om Shanti Om. But the jokes aren't as funny.
