History repeats itself for Rajat Tokas
Sapana Patil Poojary

After 'Dharti Ka Veer...', the 14-year-old actor will feature in the heroic 'Dharam Veer'

The Delhi-based lad is just 14 years old and with his terrific performance of warrior Prithviraj Chauhan (in 'Dharti Ka Veer Yodha Prithviraj Chauhan', Star Plus) he has conquered the hearts of many. And now, Rajat Tokas is all set to take on another heroic character - that of warrior prince Veer in 'Dharam Veer' to be launched on NDTV Imagine.

So, what prompted him to take up another epical show? Rajat says, "To be honest, I had never I thought I'd come so far. My role for 'Prithviraj Chauhan' was supposed to be a cameo. But it received so much appreciation that it got extended."

Ask him if he misses doing shows where he can play a contemporary character he says with a touch of arrogance, "The roles I play are of substance. Playing a contemporary character will not guarantee me as much satisfaction. The role of a warrior offers me great scope. I am required to perform several stunts - physical fights and sword duels. The swords are heavy and the exercise is extremely tiring." In his tryst with swords, Rajat had even scarred his forehead and hurt his back recently on the sets of 'Dharam Veer'.

On the personal front, he says, "I do get a lot of adulation from girls. I like it when they say, 'I love you'." Rajat says he is a good student and can balance schooling with shooting. He also enjoys partying and can be hooked to his play station all night.

Rajat Tokas (TOI Photo)
Actor Rajat Tokas seems to be getting into the rut of playing only mythological characters.

His popularity in the show Prithviraj Chauhan has ensured that the guy gets offers for only such kind of roles. But instead of trying to change his image, it seems that Rajat is enjoying doing these roles. He will soon be seen in another period drama Dharam Veer. Guess Rajat isn't bothered about being stereotyped.

Its content may not be as imaginative as the NDTV Imagine bosses had promised, but the channel certainly seems to have the got thumbs up from viewers in the first week of its launch. The channel which threw open its prime time band with four hours of programming from January 21, has notched up an impressive 55 GRPs (group rating points) and 1.7 per cent channel share in the first week. In fact, it has outperformed all GE channel launches in the last four years. What's more, according to TAM date for week 4 of 2008, NDTV Imagine ranked third in weekday prime time – Monday to Thursday – in the general entertainment space.

Ramayan has proved to be NDTV Imagine's trump card. The great mythological epic has delivered good numbers from the markets which matter most for any GE channel — the Hindi heartland. The first episode of Ramayan rated 1.8 TVR. In the key Hindi speaking markets of UP and MP (10 million-plus towns) the show averaged more than 5 TVR. Other shows like Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan' and period drama Dharam Veer have also delivered decent numbers. Says Shailja Kejriwal, creative and programming head of NDTV Imagine, "These are very good numbers and we are delighted with the response for our shows."."

In this overcrowded general entertainment space, content alone is not enough to drive eyeballs. Good marketing strategies and strong distribution contribute a lot too.
