I might be wrong, but I think I have heard / read that SLB is a very hard-to-please kind of director and filming for SLB's movies usually takes up a lot more time than other movies because he loves filming a scene over & over. It doesn't give the impression that SLB gives the actors freedom to do their part. Even if he does, ultimately a shot will be okay only when he approves that shot. If he didn't like her forzen face & glossy eyed acting, he could have disapproved of it. But he didn't. In fact, I had come across few behind the scene clips of Bajirao Mastaani in YT and I saw SLB going all "wow..." , "Beautiful!" etc etc over DP's straight faced "unone mera haath pakda zarur hai par apka chodha toh nahi, mujhse rishta jodha zarur hai par apse todha toh nahi" (I don't remember the exact dialogue 😆 it was the scene between DP & PC right before Pinga) and I was like....what? 😆😆
@ Bold: I don't know which OSO you are talking about, but to me it looked like DP had a more active role to play in that movie than she did in Padmavat, even though the latter one was the titular role 😆
😆Possibly, you do have a point. I do agree that SLB gives people a hard time getting the aesthetics right, and forgets the main point of 'directing' well. His songs, the sets and art work in the movies are phenomenal, but he falters in executing the story arc well. It's just that some actors who act well, do and some who don't, don't in his movies. I thought it was some actor who spoke about SLB letting actors perform emotional scenes their own way, so that was my impression.
DP definitely was presented well and grabbed attention in OSO than in Padmavat. But if you look closely, she's not doing much...compare that to Chennai Express and you will see the difference. At least in OSO, I honestly felt SRK was doing more of the work in each scene (most times, she had a one-note expression, but always pretty and an attention grabber). Farah in one of her interviews said that she first made DP do the waving scene, a few stills, some songs here and there, with easy dance steps and then slowly had her do a dialogue or two, just changed her hairstyle a bit for the two roles...things like that.
