The entire unfolding of events reeks of the misogyny embedded in India’s patriarchy. India is a country where sons are placed on a pedestal as pristine, pure, and perfect human beings. Each man is the good son who can do no wrong. He has no flaws or issues. If he makes any mistakes – other people, usually the wife or girlfriend, cause him to do it. Any character flaws or vices are not his own but thrust upon him by his wife or girlfriend.

And that too a girlfriend who was not present during the last week of his life! I shudder to think if this ever happened when Rhea was around , by now the public hanging would have occurred not only on TV screens.
A true characterization of misogyny is in action with the blame falling on none of the men who were present during the incident but on the girlfriend.

It was ridiculous for anyone to say not hiring Sushant for a film or not giving him a best actor award is abetting his suicide 😆

Let us selectively pick up the bad apples from the crowd, and declare it misogyny and patriarchy tyranny.

I expected better from you, RTH.

Has it been proved that he committed suicide due to mental illness? From the very first day it has been shoved down as a suicide. How do we know that it was not a murder?

Death and rape threats given to Rhea are disgusting. But that's not due to misogyny. Sooraj Pancholi was also given death threats. He is still called baby killer, rapist. He is a free man because of powerful connections not because he is a male. Have we forgotten that Sushant was ripped apart after the me too accusation? He was called rapists, man with roving eyes and a danav. His Twitter badge was taken away from him. Not a single Btown celebrity came in support of him. Where was innocent until proven guilty theme then? If a single blind item can label Sushant as a rapist then why not a FIR can label Rhea as a catalyst to Sush suicide?

Why is not SSR family innocent until proven guilty? Why are people accusing them of framing Rhea to get SSR insurance money? Why is his sisters being called evil?

Not all people with depression commits suicide, they can also be killed. Period.

Clearly a well articulated piece but the misogyny accusations I still struggle to get my head around.

“The law states that that people are innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. All suspects have a right to humane treatment and a fair trial. Rhea Chakraborty is being denied her fundamental rights.”

Is this distinct to Rhea’s case? Nirbhaya’s accused rapists were also innocent until proven guilty. By law, they deserve a fair trial (and were given one) did that stop the so-called ‘media trial’? Did it stop the calls for capital punishment from day dot? Did it stop the ‘vilification’ of those men before it was announced they were actually guilty? Whether what happened is right or wrong is a different argument but giving it the name of misogyny makes no sense to me at all. I am convinced a role reversal would not be possible because SSR would’ve been ripped apart far worse than Rhea has been. Call it a media circus, put in the politics conspiracy theories if you must to spice things up, call it a cover up of real economic issues, but misogyny? Sorry, not buying it.

You are damn right! Because everyone arrested now, his staff, Rhea and her brother were getting weed for him! Just imagine? He would have been ripped apart if they caught him! And then all of the people who have been saying nice things about him since he died would have come out and told the world about the kind of person he was and how he enjoyed smoking weed and dating women and all that. Maybe Sanjana too would have chipped in.

Man, Sushant left this world but he left everyone close to him in trouble which would take years to get out of. I wonder if they are cursing him now for all the trouble they are in.

That wouldn't have happened. What I wish other women understood was that the violent treatment of Rhea impacts all women in public, as well as private spheres – women who are blamed for the failures and even the death of the men in their lives; women who “should have seen” the signs of illness – whether mental or physical. Women, whose identities are so easily narrowed down ‘gold-digger’ and ‘manipulative’ – because apparently it’s harder to believe that a woman could love someone without wanting something in return.
