~~One~~

Now…

There was a knock on Prernah’s door. She pushed her long dark hair back and adjusted her dupatta accordingly.

“Coming” She said, she opened the door, her little sister was on the other side pouting at her.

“What’s wrong?” She asked her, Shivani pushed past her andwent to her bed.

Prerna closed the door. And followed her.

“Anurag sent me this” She said, holding out her phone. Prerna ignored the urge to look at the phone.

“Shivani its over between us…” Prerna said, a hollow feeling settled into her stomach and her eyes watered, but she tried to keep her voice even and steady.

Shivani sighed and put her phone down.

“Does Anurag know that you decided that?”

“Yes, I left him a letter”

“I don’t know if he read it, he said he would come to pick you up soon”

Prerna knew that any talk of her leaving or mention of it fell to deaf ears. Everybody believed they were meant to be together.

Prerna said nothing. If he did not think she was serious he would learn how serious she was soon enough.

Prerna heard a sound behind her but did not turn around. Shehad put on a thin white nightdress, unable to bear the heat that relented well into the late hours of the night.

“I told you never to leave without telling me” Anurag said. Prerna dropped her round brush she had picked up to run through her long hairbefore turning in for the night.

Anurag was visibly annoyed, his hands were in his pockets. He usually dressed extremely neatly nearly always in a three-piece suit. But he was just wearing a formal shirt and a pair of formal pants. The first few buttons of his shirt were undone.Even in this unkept state he was still the most handsome man she had ever seen in her life.

“I told you everything in the letter” Prerna said, looking at the floor. It hurt to look at him.

He reached out and grabbed her by the back of her neck so she would be forced to look up at him.

“You promised you would never leave me. And I will hold you by that promise until the day I die. You are a Basu now Prerna you will keep your promises. Even if I have to force you too” She felt his nose touch the topof her head and heard him inhale.

Prerna lifted her palm and touched Anurag’s cheek. It was one of their casual meetings. Which occurred every day at the park on her way home from work at the mall. Anurag had mentioned he would be needing to go on a business trip out of town and would not be able to see her for a while. He always asked her the same question every day.

“You won’t leave? while I am gone?”

“I wouldn’t leave ever”

“Ever?”

“Yes” She said, He half smiled as he looked into her innocent eyes.

“And if you did ever leave me?”

“You can just drag me back -by my ears if you have too” She said letting go of his cheek with a small laugh. Only for his hand to fall over her own and bring it back to his cheek.

“I guess it’s good you understand this” He said with half a smile.

“I have to go back home” Prerna said looking at her watch.

“I will see you next week” Prerna said, he held both her wrists firmly.

“Marry me” He said starring at them.

“What?”

“Marry me, Prerna. I hate this waiting every second of the day for this damn hour I get with you. I hate wondering where you are, what you are doing every second of the day.”
