Karisma Kapoor responds to Priya’s plea
During the Supreme Court hearing, Karisma Kapoor's counsel strongly opposed the plea. According to ANI, the petition was characterized as "frivolous" and an attempt to uncover personal and confidential information. The court has instructed Karisma to formally submit her objections and has granted her two weeks to file a detailed response.
Mandhira’s statement on Priya’s plea
Mandhira Kapur Smith, Sunjay's sister, stated that Priya's attempt to access the divorce records is "unnecessary and misplaced." She mentioned that if her brother had wished to share these documents, he would have done so during his marriage. She further described the matter as "sensitive," emphasizing the need for confidentiality, especially given the involvement of children.
About Priya’s plea
In her application, Priya claims that as Sunjay's legally married wife, she is his legal heir. She is seeking certified copies of the records related to the Transfer Petition (Civil) No. 214 of 2016, filed during Sunjay's divorce from Karisma. The petition states that these records are crucial for ongoing succession proceedings in the Delhi High Court.
The 2016 transfer petition, filed by Sunjay, sought to move the divorce case from the Family Court in Mumbai to Delhi. The former couple had resolved their disputes, and the Supreme Court dismissed the petition on April 8, 2016, after documenting detailed consent terms. Following Sunjay's death on June 12, 2025, Priya's counsel asserts her interest in her husband's estate and legal matters, following their marriage on April 3, 2017.
These events unfold amidst disputes over Sunjay's will and estate, which have escalated to the Supreme Court. In December 2025, the Delhi High Court concluded hearings in a civil suit concerning the late industrialist's personal estate, with orders pending on an interim injunction application filed by Sunjay's children with Karisma.
About Sunjay Kapur’s personal life
For context, Sunjay was married to Nandita Mahtani from 1996 to 2000. He married Karisma in 2003, and they had two children, Samaira and Kiaan. Sunjay and Karisma divorced after a lengthy legal battle in 2016. He married Priya in 2017, and they had a son, Azarius.
