Chapter 5: A Lawyer’s Suggestion, Hook or By Crook
Jatin simply groaned as I continued slurp the milkshake. Yes, I know it is weird but I have a habit of drinking milkshake when I am upset. I think partly is the fact that I’m a spoil rich kid is why I specially crave Keventers when I’m upset.
“Jodha, itis the fifth one. Can you calm down?” He asked me.
“No, my life is being torn apart and you want me to calm down?” I asked him like he was committing the most heinous crime. He rolled his eyes at my dramatics. Sakshi was in Italy with her need in dealing with the restaurant she opened there recently. I almost felt like my life was playing the worst joke at me. I put my head down on the table like my life lost everything and the only thing keepingme alive was that Keventers milkshake. “Jatin, how can dadu do that to me? I’m not Frankenstein to somehow make a perfect spouse.”
“I don’t know, Jodha, but he has never done anything without a reason. He has always been a man of reason.” He said.
“Jatin, youare trying to tell me that there is a reason why dadu thinks that someone outsider is more apt for the place that should be technically mine or dad’s?” I asked him.
“Don’t get offended on me saying it but even he knows that your dad has his own ego and in that he doesn’t consider other’s points. Which is proven with you. Now, I’m not understanding why he didn’t choose you but he is not a fool. That is all I am saying.” He defended himself.
“I can’t believe this, Jatin. Tarun is an idiot much like Daisy. The two will literally ruin the company. I don’t want that to happen.” I complained.
“Neither do I, Jodha. You and I are one team. Trust me, if I didn’t have a girlfriend, I would have acted as your new boyfriend or something so we can save the company. You’re my best friend. I wouldn’t think of anyone who loves this company as much as you did. Since the day you were born, your dad has been throwing this title on you and I can understand how it would feel to have that taken away but we can’t be spending time here drinking milkshake while what we have to do is find a man perfect in the eyes of Aditya Singh.” Jatin explained. I sighed and put the empty jar of milkshake aside.
“Perfect to dadu is almost like an impossible job. Although Tarun is an idiot, he is good with impressing people. To bring a man at the level of competing with Tarun is not easy. Tarun is quite attractive, a huge show off and quite arrogant. To find a man who can compete with him is difficult. We can’t bring an actor and make him a fake fiancé of mine.” I tried to explained.
“There is a simple solution. Look, babe. We both know this is going to sound so wattpad-ish situation but we need a fake boyfriend. No actor can act to be so in love with you in a few days. But there is always one idiot in a rich business family who isn’t really caring about business much. We need to find a guy with good business family background. So, he would be rich and know how to show off his money. If a guy isn’t that interested in business, he will turn his attention to just you. You have just smile and be pretty to him and he’ll put that position in a platter to you. Be Nur Jahan to his Jahangir. He’ll just be lost upon you and you can take all the glory from behind him. Although it is difficult to bear, rather get a lapdog rather than getting a guy who knows howto handle business. If in case, Aditya Singh actually gives him the position and he suddenly decides to become Aurangzeb and take all the power for him by throwing rest aside, it is going to be one hell of a trouble.”
“Are you kidding me? Marry a lapdog who wouldn’t know when to quit his romance?” I asked unbelievably.
“It sounds shallow, Jodha, but we don’t really have any other way to keep this company safe. If the guy is from a rich business family, he will have his own money. That mean he won’t be behind yours. If he’s a lapdog so lost in your love, he would just be smitten by you so much that he’ll naturally do anything for you.Hence, even if he is on the throne. The power is yours. So, it is all yours in reality while it seems to be his. Remember what Sanjay said, ‘If not by hook then by crook.’. Also, if you do something with a motive to do right, it isn’t wrong. In any case, you never really like any guys or like that. I’d probably think you’re aromantic. You never dated in high school like the other kids. You never had crushes or any such romance feelings for anyone in high school. Not even girls.” Jatin said. “Then who cares whether you really love the guy or not.”
Am I going to be so ambitious that I’ll marry someone just for the company? I know that I am ambitious but am I capable of playing such a big game to become the heir to the throne? I felt bad.
Jatin noted that and sighed. “I know it sounds wrong to you but this is your legacy, Jodha. At some point, your father is going to give you’re the reigns as the CEO but to be powerless against the Chairman who is tied with Daisy is not going to be of any help. The board of directors almost always side with the Chairman of the company. To deal with Aakash Singh and Rhea Singh’s influence on him is so irritating to you then imagine how irritating will it be to deal with Daisy’s Tarun.” He said.
I shuddered at the thought.
“Baby, this is my sister Jodha.” Daisy introduced to me her oaf of a boyfriend. Out of all places she could have introduced me to her boyfriend. She chose the gym.Great. Her boyfriend stood shirtless in the gym while doing his weight exercise.
“Is my handsomeness intimidating you so that you’re speechless?” He asked with a grin to me. I raised an eyebrow at him. “Don’t be. You’re after all my baby’s sister.”
“You’re the last human being who can ever intimidate me.” I commented. “Anyway. Nice to meet you.”
“Of course, it is nice to meet me. What is not nice in me? Nothing.” He added.“Also, what kind of name is Jodha. It is so boring and so old. Almost takes me to ancient times.”
The couple laughed like it was the most humorous joke in the world. I just gave them the most dry and sarcastic smile.
“Just as amusing as you find my name, I find your intense show off amusing.” I commented.
“Don’t lie now. I know you’re so attracted to me and so jealousy of Daisy. It is okay.I’m a piece meant to be jealous for.” He said with a laughter.
“And you are mine.” Daisy commented.
“Whatever…”I commented.
My first introduction to him was so annoying then how annoying it be to deal with him on a daily basis? To think I have to fuel his vanity to get him to agree with me is almost a nightmare.
“Jatin, I am going to start crying. How did my life take such a drastic turn? I was here thinking that living with dad’s stubbornness was difficult now I have to deal with Tarun’s vanity too? I mean, I agree that a bit of vanity on handsome faces is good but a man needs to know his lines. Every single time I meet him, he thinks I am in love with him or something. It is almost annoying.” I complained.
Jatin laughed at my expression. I almost seemed like life was playing the dirties joke on me and I was bearing the difficult truth.
“See. Either you work with the vanity of Tarun or handle a lapdog, constant puppiness.” Jatin gave me an option.
“There is no third option?” I asked.
“Convince Aditya Singh to change his decision.” Jatin answered.
“I want another milkshake.” I told the man at the counter. I turned to Jatin. “Now, where are we going to find a lapdog?”
“Good. Now since you’re on the track, remember the ball tomorrow. All the business families show up at the ball. It is the easiest to catch one of them in the ball.” Jatin suggested.
“Too much pressure, Jatin.” I commented.
“Look, Jo. We either do this or we go with the flow.” He made it clear.
“Alright. Alright. SO, what do we need to do for tomorrow?”
“It is easy. Just show up looking pretty. I want you to put your best effort. It should blow everyone’s head on how beautiful you actually are. I know you’re really hot and can turn on the show with your beauty so I want you to show that beauty and just be your charming self.” He answered. “It would just be a plus point if you end with that kind of wattpad-ish stories where the story starts off as a fake relationship but end up becoming real. If that happens, I demand to be the godfather of your first child.”
“Jatin, I will kill you. Shut up. I am here dying while worrying about the company and you’re talking about having children. I am almost writing up my entire life for this company. It is a huge sacrifice, you know. Every girl dreams to marry a man she has fallen in love with but my only problem is that I fell in love with what wasn’t even my own dream. It was my dad’s obsession. I don’t even know how well this is going to go. Yet, for the sake of what is my family’s legacy, I am even getting ready to a man who I don’t know that well.”
“In any case, Jo. You know that I will always be right next to you, right? In this fight, it is going to be you and me against anyone else who will want to ruin the company. See this as an arranged engagement.”
“Are you trying secure your future children’s place in this company?”
“Of course, why else do you think I am doing this? Just because you’re my high school friend?”
I just smiled a little bit knowing that I would always have Jatin to share my troubles with.
“You have to help me choose a dress.”
“Let’s go now. What if your dress needs dry cleaning or ironing? Also, I am somewhat excited to see your wardrobe. You have some really interesting clothes. My girlfriend keeps telling me that she loves the three piece suits that you wear in interviews.”
“Alright,hyper excited child.”
We both walked back into my family mansion. The Keventers shop was close to the mansion. Daisy saw Jatin.
“You’re going to marry him?” She asked. Of course, she was worried with that because Jatin is someone that dadu likes.
“Sadly, no. Although Jatin and I sound perfect, we can’t. He has a girlfriend that he really loves.” I answered.
“I have to correct you on one point, Jodha. You think wrong that Prince Charming doesn’t exist. I thought the same until I really found my Prince Charming.” Dadi said as I was entering my room.
“That is because you fell in love with Dadu. Dadu is perfect. My fate isn’t so lucky.I’m just having Jatin prepare me for tomorrow’s ball. We have potential investors to meet tomorrow. Considering I have to deal with Tarun very soon, I will prepare myself.” I answered.
“Your grandfather was perfect for me, bete. Every one has different versions of perfect. For me, I was fated with a Prince. Maybe you’re fated with a King.”She commented. I held her hands and kissed her cheeks.
“You’re the sweetest person, dadi. That’s why I love you but it is also the truth that Kings don’t accept a girl who had her own ambitions.” I told her.
“Not all men are meant to be so threatened by a woman’s ambition.” She said at last and went ahead.
We went through my wardrobe to look for an outfit for tomorrow. Looking though the whole wardrobe, we finally decided on the outfit. After Jatin left, I tried on the dress and stood before the mirror.
Here I was, beginning to be something I was never before. Things one gives up for ambition. The ambition to rule is powerful. I never understood it until today. I always said that the person was weaker in their ambition and skill to have to stoop down to the level of cheat but now when I had to put myself in the same shoes,I could feel what kind of desperation it would be. I had a reason.
Singh Corporation was started by my great grandfather with a lot of hard work. It was the fruits of his 50 years of hard work. Today, it employs 80,000 employees throughout the country. If it fails, it going to take down all the 80,000 people who worked for it. I had let go off my 14 years of life for this company because it was the dream of my family. I had never had the opportunity to even think of wanting to be anything else because it was thrown up on me but now to think all of that was on the brink of breaking, I did have the desperation. I gave it my 14 years before, what is another 14 years?
May God forgive me for playing such games but I was desperate now.
Chapter 6: The Business Party
I was going to turn heads. Today’s plan was going to go well. I will not let down people who were leaving it to me to save the company.
I took a few deep breaths before starting inside. This party was happening in a fancy restaurant with a large party hall. I was ready. Jodha Rajawat Singh was going to show people who she is. My dad, Rhea, Daisy, Tarun, Dadi and Dadu were already there. Jatin had reached just a few moments ago. While I was being taught fashion sense by a stylist, she told me that one should dress the part they want and believe themselves to be that and only then the fashion would take them there. Although Jatin and I yesterday decided on a blue dress which made me look like Cinderella but I was no Cinderella. I was a Queen. I would dress like one. The sharp attention seeking red. I wore a red dress which had gold designs on it. It was a floor length dress and slit on the dress till exactly above my knee. Black heels to go with it. My assistant carrying my bag with her. The sleeves of the dress had ruffles by the end near my fingers.
Like I had planned, everyone turned around in surprise, looking at my entry. I guess the two years of learning fashion skills paid off because I had successfully caught the eye of every single human in the room. The diamond ring on my finger that dadu gave me as my 21st birthday present. I felt like the Fashion movie’s theme song was playing in my head.
“You know I wasn’t ready for this upgrade. This dress wasn’t there in the wardrobe yesterday.” Jatin said when he walked up to me. With him was his girlfriend Alia.
“Hi. I’m Alia.” She introduced herself.
“I know. I’m glad to finally meet you.” I greeted her. I then turned to Jatin, “I know it wasn’t there yesterday but then you said that I should try to be Nur Jahan to Jahangir. Most definitely Nur Jahan was no Cinderella. Hence, here is my upgrade.”
“You’re going to intimidate some poor boy, Jodha. We weren’t trying to intimidate him.”Jatin pointed.
“She looks amazing, Jatin. Can’t you appreciate that?” Alia rebuked him. “Don’t listen to him. I am sure that every man in the room is in awe of you. You look stunning.”
I smiled at her support.
“Jatin, I know we are going to play business moves tonight but I didn’t want to fake someone by telling them I was some innocent little 19 years old Princess who is new in the world of business. I want them to know who exactly I am. I am going play business moves but not lie about my ambitious personality.” I explained. Jatin smiled at me.
“Only you would be honest while trying to catch someone off-guard.” Jatin commented.
If I had assumed that I was the only one to make a grand entry, I was definitely wrong. The biggest business party where almost all rich and mighty businessmen are there, it would be most foolish to assume that Ali Sheikhs won’t be invited. The famous descendants of Mughal line. Though they weren’t the part of reigning Mughals. As much as I had heard, they came down from the line of the famous Prince Dara Shukoh. It had been proved on many occasions, they don’t go on and throw it up on people’s faces. They know that the truth is known to people and they don’t need to specifically remind people that. It would be underestimation to think the Jalal Ali Sheikh won’t make his grand entrance. He was known for it, after all. The most efficient businessman in the country.
Jalal Ali Sheikh.
He was a genius in his league with electronics and telecommunication. He was also wonderful with business.
His black tuxedo with golden coat made all the eyes turn at him. Even Tarun just stared at him. He quickly joined his family members. He had made accessories for men a little stylish. Long hair perfectly pulled into a man bun and the mane of facial hair tamed with good grooming. It is proper grooming that can make any man look handsome. Even the man who seems to look average normally can look really attractive with proper grooming and fashion. As such, Jalal Ali Sheikh was already infamous for his beauty, he had added great business skills to his list of perfection.
Jo, we have a mission today. Don’t waste time staring at a man who you have no work with.
If I were man who isn’t into business but still had to be around business parties because of the family reputation, I’d probably be near the bar counter. I walked there and sat on the high seat.
“Wine.” I ordered. The bartender poured wine in a wine glass and passed it to me. I had eaten some food before coming here so that I don’t instantly get drunk.Obviously, it is a business party, there is going to be alcohol.
“Hi.” I turned to see a man. He was slightly nervous but he was still trying to act allrich and famous.
“Hello.” I greeted back.
“Vikrant Khurana.” He introduced himself.
“Jodha Singh.” I said. We shook hands.
“My dad is Ankit Khurana.” He explained. That is a huge sign that he’s not much of a doer himself. Usually, when you own a standard in business world, you introduce yourself by that first and then by your family. His tuxedo striped tuxedo was probably Ralph Lauren. I had suits from Ralph Lauren myself. I can recognize them anywhere. Though it is suits on regular days, during casual days, I like denim and kurti. Although, suits have their fashion in business world, I love the days with casuals because I can finally wear my long earrings with kurtis. It just holds my heart somewhere. Yes, I am an ambitious businesswoman but I also like dressing up and looking pretty. An Indian girl can never go wrong with kurtis and jeans fashion. That’s like the most basic thing. You can wear any kurti and look good. There is no worry of wardrobe malfunction with kurtis and business suits. So, I usually stick to them but like every spoilt rich girl, I own international brand dresses too.
“I’m Vice President of Singh Corporation. Glad to meet you.” I introduced.
“Related to Aditya Rajawat Singh?” He asked.
“He’s my grandfather.” I explained.
“Oh… Amazing man. He’s reached like a good height with his great sense of business.”
“Dadu is amazing.”
“I should say, you look stunning. I don’t any man can resist someone as beautiful as you.”
“Thank you.You look wonderful yourself.”
We spoke for a while with each other. Within the first few minutes of the conversation,I knew he was the perfect bakra. As haughty as it sounds, I knew he would be fine enough. I was only done with half the glass of wine but I knew enough about him. Just as spoilt as me. His interests are in modelling like Tarun but his dad makes him sit in the boardroom. I know this isn't really nice to treat someone like an accessory but it was the matter of 80,000 people who worked in our company and my dream. No matter how dad and I are, as a daughter i cannot watch him become heartbroken over how he failed and bankrupted the company.
“You’re probably an expert in the boardroom.” He commented laughing.
“Well, I don’t know about expert but I know to hold my own in the boardroom.” I agreed with a smile. The music was being played and people were dancing. I was introduced to Ankit Khurana. It didn’t take long for me to impress his family who had come. His elder brother was married and was doing major business work of the company with his father.
“Diamond ring?” Ankit Khurana asked.
“My grandfather gave it to me as a birthday gift. Although the misconception the diamond rings are only for engagement fingers, I do like owning rings for general purpose. After all, diamonds are what girls like.” I said. The problem with rich families is that they like people who can show off fell. It is because considering that she is going to probably be attached to their family reputation. Even my own family sometimes does that. I have always liked Jatin’s mom because she is so casual. Almost like my own mom. It was so easy to mingle with them. The Khuranas are anything but casual. They’re almost as ambitious as Ambanis. It is a problem.
“That’s dadu. Dadu, I think you’re familiar with them.” I said while holding Dadu’s arm.
“Oh.Definitely. Ankit Khurana.” Dadu greeted them. Dadu shook hands with them. Dad and Rhea too appeared. Soon, business talks had begun. I gave my own inputs.
“You’ve got one talented girl, Aakash. If I had a daughter like her, I would’ve left all my work on her and just relaxed at home.” He said. All words, man. All words. I hardly assume you to be the kind of man who will leave everything to someone and relax.
“She is still learning, though.” Dad said. There was laughter and all. Everyone was meeting each other. I guess Khuranas and my family were doing well. Dad and Ankit Khurana went on ahead. Rhea with his wife went to get some drinks.
“I hope I am not interrupting but it is almost impossible not to notice you in the crowd.”
This wasn’t supposed to happen. I wasn’t hoping to be approached by him. I was here to make sure I can mix with Vikrant. Why was Jalal Ali Sheikh speaking to me?
“Almost impossible not impossible.” I commented. Why was I passing casual comments with him? Jo, what is wrong with you? Stupid. Stupid. His perfume was just intimidating. I heard him laugh at that.
“True but a man is meant to appreciate beauty when he sees it. Now, what’s the point of having eyes if they see past someone like you?” Smooth, Ali Sheikh, real smooth. No wonder you get the girls. I just laughed. If I say anything more, it will be flirting which is not going to sit well with my plan.
Jo, please keep your mouth shut. Don’t pass anymore clever comments.
“Mind if I ask for a dance?” He asked. Dadu just smiled. I looked at everyone. I then let him take my hand. He smiled and led me to the dance floor.
He put his arm on my waist. There was soft graceful waltz. The music was lovely. I had to admit, he was handsome regardless. His scent was definitely amazing. Though it wasn’t from anything I knew. Probably custom made. His eyes were greyish green. He looked at me like he had seen me after such a long wait. Almost like I was the most beautiful scene for him.
“Your eyes are pretty.” He commented. His voice had that soft sigh like it was a deep confession of how long it had been since he saw me.
“They’re just brown. There is nothing special about brown.” I pointed out.
“That’s because you’ve never loved anyone with brown eyes.” He replied. I laughed atthat.
“Do you say that to every girl about her eyes?” I commented.
“Well, if they are beautiful, they are. I’ve been told that you should compliment when you see something beautiful and sweet. So, I do.”
I looked behind once to see Vikrant. He was looking at me himself. I passed him a smile.
“Don’t saying but I am pretty sure he is not your boyfriend. So, is it like a pretense that you like him?” He asked.
“You’requite conclusive, Mr. Ali Sheikh.” I commented.
“That isn’t the way one looks when they’re in love with someone, Ms Singh.”
“For someone who is known for his short-term relationships, you’re not really qualified to speak about how a person in love looks like.”
He laughed at that taunt.
“Ishq toh dil ki gehraion se aankhon mein darya bankar behti hai, Heer.” I guess it was a line from some poetry but he made it sound pretty.
“That is all poetry, Mr. Ali Sheikh. No one looks crazy in love when it is reality.Don’t mix reality for Bollywood movies.”
“It has to come from somewhere. No camera can fake chemistry that two people share. The camera and photography can only make the background sing beautiful songs of romance but not make the chemistry set perfectly.”
“You can’t be the judge of someone else’s love life. Thank you.” I made it clear to him that I wasn’t interested in his commentary on what was between Vikrant and me.I think it stung somewhere because it was true.
“Trust me, Jodha. The day you have the look in your eyes that says you’re in so much love with him, I’ll not need to comment. I’ll back off myself.”
“What? You think you are in some love with me? Don’t fool yourself or me. I don’t believe in love at first sight.”
“Don’t. Who is asking you to believe it? I have the right to believe what I want and you can believe what you want.”
What was the issue with this guy? Though there was intensity in his eyes and there was an unusual air about him, he was still pretty much a stranger to me and vice-versa. Why did he speak like he knew me so well? Why did it feel like I was so comfortable speaking to him?
“May I?” Vikrant walked up and took his chance to dance. Jalal kissed my fingers like a gentleman and walked away. Vikrant put his hand on my waist and there was slow dancing.
“Sounds like you two were having a nice conversation.” He tried to mask the worry in a curious statement. I chuckle.
“Not really. We were speaking about basic things. His views and mine are a bit different.” I explained.
“Oh. About what?” Vikrant asked.
“You and I.” I replied.
“Us? What was he saying about us?” He was a little worried.
“Nothing important, Vikrant. He’s just some guy who is used to getting attention he wants.” I tried to brush it away.
“He wants your attention. That much everyone seems to notice.” Vikrant commented.
“Sure, Vikrant. He is Jalal Ali Sheikh. What do you expect from him? A man who can keep his attention span on someone for long. He’s a boy. He’ll pass on from one girl to another. I am not a girl for passing relationships or anything. I don’t assume to spend time in something which doesn’t seem to have a potential for some long-term attachment.”
“We have that potential?”
“I don’t know. You tell me.”
He just gave a smile. I smiled back.
“Who knows.”
Good.Playing meant we were getting somewhere.
