To answer your question, calling Ray elitist is what is funny. 🤣

he is well spoken but was spoke his mind about the "unsophisticated" audience

Why? Because he made Pather Panchali? For your information, a man can make a film on feminism and still be a sexist asshole. A man can make movies on communal violence and be a Fascist POS himself. Everyone with a brain knows that. So yeah, continue to 🤣😉
So many butthurt replies, and only one or two coherent, well-thought-out responses. Not surprising though. The majority of Bongs are sore at the bottom when it comes to Tagore and Ray.😆 It how we're conditioned from childhood.
I don't blame you. But kindly understand the context first before laughing out loud and landing with a thump on the floor.

Sure sure. Go ahead with irrelevant comparisons. Where did I even speak of his films ? 🤣
I am not sure if you're a bengali or not, but I'd suggest try reading of his life/biographies (lots of books available on Amazon) before you decide to reach to the conclusion. You asked a question and you dont seem to be accepting the answers from anyone and rather trying to establish your opinion repeatedly. Someone who's seeking an honest answer, would not harp on one interview and judge him based on his answer from a 9 min clip.
And to clear the air, so much for misguiding people - Ray called the critics Stupid who could not differentiate between religion and religion fanaticism, not the audience. He called the audience rather unsophisticated, which IS true, looking at the type of movies that go onto become commercially blockbuster. Pardon him for speaking the truth.

I've read plenty about him, from memoirs of other people, excerpts from his biographies by Andrew Robinson and Marie Seton. So I'm very well-up-to-date on him, thanks. You can broach any topic related to him, and I'll write you an essay on it. I've been studying him in detail since long.
And LOL, which "honest replies" do you see here other than Sashay's? You think '🤣' is an honest debate or discussion of some sort, OK then. 🤪
It doesn't sound like fake British accent to me.... I'd much rather listen to him talk than Alia's unintelligent and uncouth Hinglish.
More people should aspire to talk coherently with a good diction.
So, I'll be honest, I don't know who Satyajit Ray is, or the whole Bengali angle, but I can't say I disagree with him on the Indian commercial movie audience. How else can we explain movies like Garam Masala or No Entry doing well otherwise? or Happy New Year? 😆
Many beautiful movies bomb at the box office and many terrible ones do well. I can't for the life of me find any humor in Sajid Khan movies or even Rohit Shetty's Golmaal. One movie I do love is Hungama--it was was well made and funny as hell.
Not at all. His stories and works were very connected to the realities. Feluda does give an elitist vibe, but that's the character.
Moreover personally people who worked with him (had the extreme privilege of working with two of his close workers) spoke about his connect to keep it real and an extremely easy going man with strong discipline on set for everyone alike, an elitist doesn't treat everyone equally
Devi, pather panchali, none give an elitist vibe.
About that interview, even I feel his works were a bit evolved for the time he was taking on (ghare baire) and he did portray the elites of bengal but that might be due to his upbringing in the same circle is what I feel
Never knew that.
More of a satyajit ray the writer fan.Grew up reading feluda Stories.
Even I'm a tad bit more inclined towards the writer Ray. Oh feluda is 😍
