okay thanks, makes sense. Making the language suddenly mandatory would not have worked but having it in the curriculum, I suppose many parents will want kids learning Mandarin as a skill for opportunities in China.

Mandarin is an optional subject in many schools in India and here in USA too...my nephew in India took it as a subject.

Yes. 

Mandarin is closer to one of Nepal’s regional languages so it’s apparently easier to learn for those native speakers. Most Nepalese go to China to study Medicine and it will be easier for them. Learning any language is a skill. I mean Mark Zuckerberg learned Chinese to grow FB in China but ...

I did hear of students in US taking it up, even Ivanka Trump's kids are, but, whoa.. Mandarin is available as an optional subject in Indian schools?? had no idea of this πŸ˜²
