Issue isn't with "Nepotism" per se!
Nepotism is universal no matter how unfair it may be!
Nepotism has also given us some of the good talents!
Problem arises when "untalented and average" folks are pushed ahead of the queue!
Problem arises when the same average talent is placed on a pedestal by all means possible - unfair snatching of projects, undermining others talent via PR and media, smear campaign, reducing outsiders to certain level of exposure and not giving them the same treatment as those of insiders etc etc!
So question shouldn't be "Why Nepotism persists" rather our focus should be "How nepotism can be balanced with fair practice?!"!
Give everyone the same platform - aka "Audition" - Whoever tops the it can move ahead in line regardless of insiders or outsiders - this will give industry a chance to flourish with talents coming from various background!
I know it's quite idealistic a scenario - And it won't happen completely!
But even if there is manageable balance between Idealism and realism, our society can sustain!
This !! This is the thing and people have taken this debate to another level and are giving it different turns. I missed this thread somehow.

I dont think this discussion is going anywhere.. everybody is using it to further their own agenda.. Things can change only when both the film fraternity and audience take the responsibility.
Bollywood should create an environment which gives more opportunity for outsiders and have proper audition process in place for everyone. Also the audience needs to support good movies which are shouldered by outsiders, be it director or actors.
But I dont see anybody taking responsibility.
Bollywood is defending themselves e.g. Sonam, Sonakshi... Varun & Alia have also given stupid stmnts regarding nepotism in past.. so doesnt look like they want to change or educate themselves in this matter
On the other hand audience is pinning all the blame on KJo and gang but also neglects any good/content driven product which comes out of Bollywood..
So I dont think, even this discussion will cause any change.
One of the sanest takes on this debate.

The Reason why nepotism will persist is because the state of our Indian Media. They literally beg stars to take a pictures, media makes a huge story on how cute Taimur ali khan, may are sold out to push cover stories for PR. Within 2 months of a time everything goes back to as it is, Bollywood mafia will control as it always.
