This story is set up when Bondita turns twentyand Anirudh is thirty.
“ Bondita….kahan hai tu? Jaldi andar aaja. Tere sasuraal wale aate hi honge tujhe lene. Zyada din kahan reh paate hain tere bina?” Bondita’s Maa called out for her.
She was outside the house, playing with a little puppies who were roaming around the house. She had just yesterday come back from Calcutta after her second year was finished. It was a complete two months break and she had returned with full intention of spending time with her family.
She was very attached to everyone in her sasuraal except for her own husband with whom she had not interacted in a very long time, five years to be precise because he had gone to London then for work experience and two years later, she left for Calcutta for studies. She did come back a lot but he, not even once. She had got to know an year back what exactly had transpired between her pati babu and Pari didi and since then, she used to feel very guilty whenever she used to come face to face with Saudamini and this was the reason why she had never ever even tried to interact with her pati babu whom she considered as her idol. But eventually, Mini didi had managed to convince her that none of it was her fault and since then, both of them had been closer than ever!
Mini didi on the other hand, had moved on years ago and married Koushik babu, the one who used to live just next to the Roy Choudhary mansion. To be honest, they both looked lovely together.
“ Bondita….kahan khoi hui hai? Jaldi aake tayyar hoja, tere sasuraal wale aa rahe hain na, dekh tu kaise ghum rahi hai, maang tak nahi bhari hai, chal jaldi.” Her mother scolded her.
“ Maa…” She whined but was pulled inside the house.
“ Maami, Sampu didi kab aa rahi hai?” She asked her maami who was in the kitchen.
“ Tere sasuraal walo ke saath hi aa rahi hai teri Sampu didi.” She replied in a haste and continued doing what so was. Her mother also joined in helping her.
“ Aai Bondita, aise aayegi sasuraal walo ke samne?Jaldi ja aur tayaar ho ja.” Maami scolded her too.
“ Jaa rahi hoon maami.” She replied and was about to walk in her room when her maama walked to the living room with her in laws and Mini di. She always used to come because there was no female in the family.Butone face she never expected to be here. Her pati babu!! But what was he doing here. When did he get back from London? And when did he start looking so handsome? He did put some muscle! She could feel him looking at herself and dared to look at him too, actually, slightly peaked but his eyes somehow caught her’s.
“ Bondita….yeh kaise jhalliyon ki tarah ghoom rahi ho?”Sampoorna asked, but they both continued to look at each other, lost in their own world.
Yeh kapdo pemitti lagi hai, Baal saware nahi hain aur sindoor tak nahi lagaya hai. Chalomere saath.” Mini came to me and stood in front of her and yet, all she did was look.
“ Woh….woh mai….” She absolutely had no idea what to say as she hastily looked away from him to Saudamini.
“ Ab woh woh karti rahogi ya chalogi bhi?” Mini didi asked her again.
“ Haan didi.” She replied, tucking a loose hair strand at the back of her ear as she walked inside the room with them.
“ Kya Bondita….aise koi rehta hai kya?” Sampoorna asked her but she was too lost to answer.
“ Bondita….Bondita? Ki halo?” Saudamini asked her. ( KI HALO – What happened? )
“ Kuch bhi toh nahi didi.” She replied, collecting herself.
“ Yeh ladki….” Sampoorna said and handed a saree to her to wear. She did and got out. Then Saudamini did her hair and Sampoorna went outside to be with others.
“ Kya hua Bondita? Apne pati babu ke dekh sharmaa gaina?” Saudamini teased her.
“ Kya Mini didi, aisa toh kuch bhi nahi hai.” She replied, blushing.
“ Haan, haan…..sab dekha maine.” She teased her further, making Bondita go more red if that was even possible.
“ Didi!” She whined and Saudamini laughed.
“ Chalo, ab sindoor laga lo.” She asked her.
“ Par didi, itne saalo se nahi lagaya hai, pati babune hi manaa kiya tha. Ab jab tak who wapis nahi bolte, main nahi lagaungi.” She replied and covered her head.
“ Pata nahi yeh kya chalta rehta hai tumhara aur Anirudh ka.” She said, huffing and both of them walked out.
Bondita them went to touch her kaka’s and baba’s feet and greeted Batuk and her Som dada.
“ Bahu, yeh sahi nahi hai, jab bhi tum laut ke aati hotoh sabse pehele, yahan aati ho. Are bhai, sasuraal mein bhi log yaad karte hain tumhe.” Kaka complained to her.
“ Kaka, agar mai yahan nahi aati pehele toh aap log mujhe phir aane hi nahi dete!” She exclaimed, making everyone chuckle.
“ Baat toh solah aane sach kahi hai bahu ne waise.” Baba agreed with me as he kept his hand on my head.
“ Koi baat nahi, ab lene aa gaye hain na.” Som dada said and everyone sat down, talking.
She was helping maami and maa in serving everyone.Later, in about an hour, they left for the Roy Choudhary mansion.
“ Bahu, tum Anirudh ke saath uski gaadi mein aa jao.Baaki ki dono gaadiyon mein jagah nahi hai.” Kaka said as everyone sat.
She nodded hesitantly because there was no place in real. She had to sit with him and then ultimately talk after five years!
As she walked to him car, her heart had already started beating rapidly. She had been away from him for years but that did not stop her from falling in love with him. She fell in love with his personality. What he had done for her was not easy. Sacrificing his love but now, if needed be, she will readily sacrifice her love for him if he had another woman in his life. What if he never saw her anything more than just a student?
“ Bondita….Bondita? Chalna nahi hai kya? Puri raat yahin khade rehene ka iraada hai?” Her attention was grasped by her pati babu. She looked at him and then blinked a few times to process what he had said andthen replied.
“ Haan, nahi….woh…who mera mat….matlab.” She started but was interrupted.
“ Kya chal raha hai Bondita? Saaf saaf bolo.” He instructed her.
Now how to make him realize what chemical locha was going on in her brain. Like she was blank, completely.
He stepped down from the car and walked to her.
“ Pata nahi tumhe kya ho gaya hai…..chalo, baitho ab.”He said, opening the door for her.
She just looked at him with some kind of strange fascination.
“ Kya dekh rahi ho Bondita? Baitho na.” He said again.
She then nodded and sat down quickly after realizing that she was embarrassing herself so much in front of him.
He walked to the driving seat and they started for the mansion.
“ Tumhara college kaisa chal raha hai?” He asked, eyes focused on the road in the front.
“ Accha. 2nd year ho gaya.” She replied, looking at him.
“ Good, good.” He said and she nodded.
The rest of the ride went in a comfortable silence.
“ Aap wapis kab laute?” She asked him as they were about to reach.
“ Pichle hafte. Aur ab main nahi ja raha London wapis.Tumhare saath Calcutta chalunga aur wahi barristry karunga.” He added.
“ Kyu? London wali job kyu jaane di aapne?” She asked,a little shocked.
“ Bondita, mujhe kabhi London nahi rehna tha. Yahi rehna tha. Wahan bus isliye gaya tha jisse thoda work experience mil jaye.” He said, looking at her as he parked the car.
“ Ohhh….” I sang, mindlessly.
“ Tum kyu itne sadme mein lag rahi ho? Tum nahi chahtiki main tumhare saath rahoon kya?” He asked her, a little smirk playing on hislips.
“ Kya? Mere saath rahenge aap” She asked, getting shocked again.
He then stopped walking and she did too.
“ Bondita, andar chalo pehele, phir baat karte hain.Tum aaj kuch zyada hi sawaal kar rahi ho.” He addressed her and then started walking back.
She followed him.
As they got inside, Bihari kaka was serving dinner.Everyone had already reached there.
Seeing that, Bondita quickly got into her element of being the badi bahu of the house. She quickly went to wash her hands and got back.
“ Bihari kaka, aap jake khana kha lijiye. Aaj main parosungi.” She said, taking the bowls from his hand and started serving to herkaka and baba along with the others.
“ Bahu, tum bas aayi nahi ki kaam karna shuru kardiya. Bihari waise hi itna aalsi hai, aur kar dogi tum.” He complained and she chuckled but still served.
After everyone was done, she sat down for dinner. Not because there was some rule of that sort, but because she felt satisfied while eating after everyone was done.
“ Boudi, tum jaake so jao ab, thak gayi hogi.” Som dada came to the living room where she was sitting, thinking about where to goto sleep. Usually, she slept in her patibabu’s room because he did not used to be here, but now that he is, where should she go?
“ Haan dada.” She replied a little hesitantly and walked upstairs. Deciding to go the guest room to sleep, she still had to go to pati babu’s room as that was where her clothes were kept.
She slowly walked to his room and knocked it.
“ Come in.” Came his reply as she walked in.
“ Bondita tum….koi apne hi kamre mein aane ke liye knock karta hai kya?” He asked, looking amused.
It was true that they did use to share this room earlier where he used to sleep on the couch and she took the bed on his insistance but now, things were a little awkward and different.
“ Woh….woh main toh bas kapde lene aayi thi. Lekeguest room mein ja rahi hoon.” She replied, looking at him and he had a little frown.
She immediately took her clothes and was about to walkout when he held her wrist to stop her.
“ Ruko Bondita, tum uss samay bahar kuch puch rahi thi na?” He asked her, making her turn to face him.
“ Haan….woh main….ki aap mere saath rahenge Calcutta mein?”She suddenly remembered but stuttered because of their close proximity.
“ Haan toh aur kaha rahunga agar apni patni ke saath nahi toh?” He asked as if it was the most obvious thing is the world but Bondita was shocked for the hundredth time after meeting him today.
He had never addressed her as his wife before right now ever. She was just Bondita.
“ Pa….patni?” She asked, going all red as heat rose inher cheeks.
“ Tumhe yaad hai jab maine uss samay phool aur kaliyon wali baat batayi thi? Ki har ek cheez ka ek samay hota hai?” He asked her, making her look at him in the eye by slightly lifting her head from her chin.
She nodded slightly in a yes, blushing.
“ Toh bas, samay yahi hai samjhlo. Tum meri patni aaj bani ho.” He replied, as he lightly pecked her forehead.
“ Par, aapki zindagi mein aur koi nahi hai?” Came her stupid insecure question.
“ Hai na Bondita…..tum ho. Tum meri patni ho toh aur koi kaise ho sakti hai?” He asked, meeting her eyes again and again, she looked down, all shy.
He then walked to the dressing table where a few of her things were kept and among them was her sindoor paatr. He took a pinch of it between his thumb and index finger, walked back to her and getting her veil down, filled her maang with that sindoor, matching the color of her hair partition with the color on her cheeks and they both hugged, marking the beginning of their journey as a husband a wife along with the relationship of a mentor and a mentee.
